| Overnighter On The River Trent! Just got back from a very interesting overnight trip to the Trent at Collingham. It was a bit of a social event with a few guys from another Forum and proved to very entertaining and informative. This is Collingham Weir, it's big! We fished approx half a mile below it (just around the corner shown in the second photo): ![]() ![]() It's the limit of any tidal effects but we were still approx 40 miles from the sea! This part of the Trent is renowned for it's barbel and they exist in large numbers throughout the stretch. However, the river was very, very low and clear, add to that the bright clear skies especially throughout the night and you end up with pretty lousy conditions for fishing. This was the area we fished (Dawn this morning). Upstream of my swim, my swim and then mine to the left with Sean's to the right. I was suprised to find only about a maximum of 6ft/7ft of water in front of me but it still took upto 4oz of lead/feeder to hold bottom. My 1.5tc and 1.75tc rods were about right for the job but I can certainly now see why heavier gear is probably needed in "normal" conditions: ![]() ![]() ![]() It was so cold overnight that icebergs were forming! ![]() Although we were fishing from around midday Saturday, not a lot was happening, so we had plenty of time for a chat, some beer, cheese and port (very civilised!) and some more beer! The conditions pretty much dictated that nothing was going to happen until early evening and into the night. But the very clear skies and bright half-moon seemed to debunk that theory as well! One of the group had an eel, someone had a small chub but that was about it. A group of around 6 fishing above us were all blanking as well! I had one sharp rap on the rod which was probably a chub but things were not looking good. At around 8pm I was tinkering with my second rod, debating on what to try next, when the other one started bouncing around. This turned out to be a long slim chub which probably went about 3.5lbs. Excellent, at least I hadn't blanked. ![]() Enthusiasm suitably refreshed I fished hard for the next two hours. But even though it was only a half-moon, it lit up the whole area! But right on cue, just as it finally set at around 10pm, the same rod went off again. This was a much better fish and fought really well. I eventually glimpsed the barbel in the beam from my head torch and Sean deftly netted it at the first attempt. A superb, long, wiry example that pushed the scales round to 8lbs 13oz. I was well pleased with my first ever Trent barbel: ![]() We all thought that might herald the start of some sport but it was not to be. I fished on until about 2am as did most others but not a touch, let alone a fish! I finally gave in and had a bit of sleep but was up and about at 5:30am ready for the dawn onslaught..... nothing, not a whimper for anyone! But it was a new experience for me, I learnt a lot, especially talking to some of the guys who fish this venue/method regularly and I'd caught my first ever Trent barbel so I was very happy driving home despite the M1/M25! ![]() __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe |

| Re: Overnighter On The River Trent! I'm puzzled, don't you mean Cromwell Weir? I used to fish a few fields below there, in the late 70's, early 80's, on a stretch near Carlton run by Sheffield and District Anglers Association. I used to get some good nets of roach and chub. I never hear of any-one fishing that stretch now, I expect it's changed a lot since then. ![]() The chub and barbel look superb. Never had a barbel at Carlton but I used to get the odd carp and bream. |
