| A Vintage Afternoon Jolly Piscator and I decided to pop over to Berkley Lake for some fun with the wildies. As we both own and like to use some old takle, we deiced that we should both us egear thatwas at least 40 years old. Obviously we were using new line, but the wrrels and rods were of the correct vintage. I can't remember the details of the cane Barble rod that Jolly Piscator was using, but its a nice one. The reel he was using has a very harsh click, but its and all metal post war thing. I was using a Milwards Spanish Reed, with cane tip section, 'ultralite', its forst outing in my hands and I have to say it performed wondefully, sensative a tip to use light lnes and not bump small fish in the colder mobnths, but there is enough backbone in the middle section to hande the wildies. Bait was either a peice of luncheon meat, or my seasonal paste which I have now named 'purple peril'. I'm in the process of making up a big batch for the Todber session, most of which will become boilies, as the small fish sem to beat the bigger ones to it. On the plus side, roach and rudd seem to leave it alone. Here a snap of a typical berkley wildie and JP's set up. Oh the floats were of course quills, and fished with a lift method. ![]() |
