River Severn Birds Meadow Ripple BAA water

Well had a few hours spare today so with the wind dieing down I decided to point my car in the direction of Birds Meadow Ripple which is a BAA water on the river Severn.

Tackle
Greys barbel rod with a 4 oz tip
Open ended swimfeeder
Braided main line
2lb hook length (about 18 inches long)
Hooks 18 to 16

Bait
2 pints of mixed maggots (I like using mixed maggots as you never know what the fish are into on the severn)
Hempseed
Standard ground bait (A very dense one)

So once I got to the swim I mixed up my ground bait into a heavy mixture so that it would hold the bottom better and added hempseed and my maggots. Then starting on size 18 hook and a signal maggot. I went about building my swim up casting every few mins so that I got some bait on the bottom. Within 15 minute the fish started to show, starting with small roach and skimmer bream of only 2-3ozs but still a bit of fun.

Then after about 30 minutes the fish started to get a little bit bigger and as a new shoal came in , they were hitting 5 -8 ozs . Now that the swim was in full swing I decided to scale up and went to size 16 hooks and double maggot changing the colours of the maggots until I found what the were most hungriest for on this day which turned out to be red maggots.

Well the next hour or so I was kept very busy with a fish every few minutes and at last the better bream started to show with these being in the region of 1 to 1.5 lb.

I continuously feed the swim and if I didn’t have a take within a few minutes then it was straight back in and fill the feeder up again and back out it went.

It was a fab few hours and my bait was all gone so with a sun burnt face I packed up and made my way home. I was surprised that big chud didn’t turn up later but hay that’s fishing

Think I could have really bagged up here (had a good 20 – 30lb ish), but the day was about enjoying myself as my match days are well behind me.

So if you looking for a great day’s fish don’t forget you rivers!!! These fish are truly wild and give a great fight and probably never been caught before or only once in there life.
