Can’t sleep, went fishing instead:

I have trapped a nerve in my left shoulder and I am finding that I cannot seem to sleep very well, I found myself wide-awake at 3:30 this morning. Therefore, I left it an hour and I still was not a sleep so I got up and went fishing. Armed with some cut Bacon grill and a pint of maggot I set off to the River Frome at Farleigh Hungerford, about 5 miles from Bath. The water is one of the many exchange tickets the Warminster club has. I arrived at 5:30 and found a nice peg to fish. My plan of attack was twofold. One, to fish on the stick with maggot at depth and two, fish the lead with hair-rigged Bacon Grill.

(Early Morning at Farleigh)

I started on the lead and within 2 minutes, I missed a clonker of a bite. So I brought the rod in are-baited and re-casted to the same spot. The bait must have been in the water for no more than 20 seconds, when I had another strong bite, this time I hooked the fish, A nice chub of around the 1lb mark. Over the next hour, I had four Chub, biggest at 2lb ish, a nice Skimmer and a lost pike that had taken the Bacon Grill fairly.

(View from my Peg)

As the morning wore on, I lost two more good Chub and missed a few more clonking bites. So it was on to the stick, first cast produced a dancing stick float, yep just as thought minnows, It did not matter what I did, four maggots or one, the minnows would not let the bait get to the bottom. So tried a small piece of Bacon Grill and it did produce some small chub and a couple of Gudgeon.

By 11:00am, I had another good chub, this time on the Stick. I decided that I would stop for the day at Twelve noon, so at 11:30 I went on the tip for the last half hour. As I was faffing around and not paying attention, heard my rod clatter, I turned just in time to see my rod heading for the river, I managed to grab the rod and with my heart in my mouth, I began to play the fish. My best ever Chub is 2 ½ lb not too big. When I saw the head of the of this fish break the surface my first thought was “that’s a 4lber”. On landing the fish and feeling for the weight I recon the fish was around 3-3 ½ lb, but with not having my scales I was not to certain, so I know it was a PB but with knowing the weight I will have to leave my PB as 2 ½.

(The seven Chub I landed, the biggest one is on the left)

I enjoyed the Mornings Fishing, but I found when I got home and sat down in my armchair I drifted off to sleep and managed a few hours’ kip.

Nice one Steve. I look forward to trying that spot myself later on this season. Tmrw's working party at Foxham will be fun. Shame I'm going to miss most of it.
We have a tomato tasting day at work.
