Decided to have a crack @ the river yesterday wasn't sure where to fish but ended up on the royalty @ about 2pm. Walked the stretch to spot some fish 1st & there were some lovely fish around mostly bream, pike, chub & silvers. I opted to fish the top stretch just above whats called the stumps. ![]() Looking down the river from the pipes ![]() Looking down to the pipes from above the stumps Well started feeding hemp & a few grains of corn. Using pepperami on the hair but switched to corn only to find the fish kept whipping my corn off the hair (note to self) next time I must take some imitaion corn. This was my swim ![]() I was fishing the far bank under the trees @ 4pm I saw a red arrow & a sea vixen go over head, theres an airshow in Bournemouth in a couple of week so I guess they're training for that & later I saw all the red arrows doing a display. I have to say although the royalty is a very popular place for anglers down here its amazing what wildlife you can see. I must of seen 2 pairs of kingfishers I think it was going up & down the river about 50 times, I also saw what looked like a pair of quails as I was meandering up to my swim. Well @ 4-30 I was rewarded with my 1st fish. A 5lb bream not the barbel I was after but a welcome fish when things are slow. ![]() Then took a wander up the river a tat & had a go @ long trotting but my float fishings not as good as it once used to be & its something I need to get to grips with again I think. Anyway back on the leger gear & within 10 minutes another bream about the same size as the first. ![]() Spent the rest of the evening watching the wildlife which is something that I do quite a lot on the avon. Cant remember who it was that said 'theres more to fishing than catching fish its about being there, making contact is enough' think it was Chris Yates. I certainly hold with that philosophy & the older I get the more I love rivers. I must of seen 5-6 other anglers all day a lovely peaceful day in all. Left @ around 9pm with bream rolling all over the fishery & what looked like pike or perch having their tea as small fry exploded out of the water in the slacks as I walked by .... Happy days & barbel watch out i'll be back! Rob. ![]() __________________ So many types of fishing ... so little free time...

Re: Royalty report... Good report! I know that area so well. It's been a bit hit and miss of late as the flow has not been as strong as it should have been. This time last year Trammells was alive with barbel but so far they seem to be a bit lower down towards The Pipes, Greenbanks and The Railway (not that I've had any!). The Stumps and Trammels do hold a lot of bream when its a bit sluggish and the whole fishery contains some stunning perch. I keep meaning to give them a serious go, but so far........! __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe

Let you know how I get on this friday, did see a cracking barbel come out of the stumps on sunday when we went for a walk down the river. Must of been a double by the looks of it. Anyway watch this space... Rob. p.s Neil if that avatar of yours is still true you should get yourself up northfield, fish slope with with fishmeal boiles & aim for the point off to your left, you'll find some moggies in there usually between the hours of 11pm & 3am mate hope that helps? I'd wait till the kids are back @ school tho before I'd venture down there... __________________ So many types of fishing ... so little free time...
