"nuisance" carp at norldey 2.

Had an evening session where the main aim was to catch some bigger roach, bream and tench from BAA Norldey 2.

Put out a "ghost" rod loaded with a home made tutti futti boilie broken up and put on a hair. Baited a margin swim with corn, meat, hemp and boilies (that makes it sound like I emptied a skip in, I didn't). And left that to fish while I set up a waggler on 6lb main line, 4lb hook length and 16 kamasan eyed speccy hook.

Found the bottom of the nearside slope and then loose fed hemp and sweetcorn before fishing sweetcorn on the hook.

Started immediately getting bites from some pretty small roach but the bigger ones were there too so they were half a poundish in size. Caught a skimmer before the first bleeps from the carp rod but no run. Changed the boilie for some tutti frooti luncheon meat . Recast to about 5 foot from the bank to my left and then carried on with the waggler. What a lovely way to fish the waggler is, little drift so it was an insert job and the bites were coming , maybe not thick and fast but often enough.

Another ten minutes and then it was beep beep beep and whir as the bait runner let line out to a fast running carp. A spirited fight and a mirror I guess was about 6lb as in the net, unhooked and back to recover.

Wanted to see if the boilie would catch so rebaited the swim a bit, recast and back on the waggler.

The float line went quiet and I remember thinking, great that's the tench gone then, carp. Sure enough the float went under in an un roachy way and the next thing I know it's off with the anti-reverse and watch the line fly off the reel. About 60 yards out I lost the fight and the hook came loose.

Rebaited with sweetcorn and was back in to the smaller stuff before the float went again and the fish ran for the hills, out of breath and gave up quicker than a pva baiting strategy in a downpour. Bream, probably about 2-3 lb, typical slab though, hard to tell.

A few more roach and I thought I'd try to target any tench so switched to a scrap of luncheon meat torn from a cube . Float settled and nothing happened, for about ten minutes. Reeled in, bait still OK , so out it goes. Five minutes later and the float sailed away followed by me doing the backwinding trick again.

This time, I knew there were no major snags, I gave the fish it's head till it stopped. Then coaxed it back, very slowly and gently. It must have only taken 5 minutes but it felt like hours before the fish seemed to realise it was beaten and ended up in the net. Again I reckon between 4 and 6 pound on a size 16 to 4lb hook length and 6LB main line. That might be the heaviest carp I've ever taken on light gear as I don't like targetting fish with too light a set up as it draws the fight out too much. I remember thinking, just for a second, these carp are a nuisance but then I remembered all them years ago I would have been over the moon to be catching fish like that, it all fell in to perspective and I grinned. The fish went in and recovered almost immediately before I let her (or he) swim out .

As the light failed I saw what had to be tench bubbles near the float and my heart started the boom boom boom it does when I think a tinca is about to take the bait and drag that float under.

This time it wasn't to be . So a mixed bag of roach, bream and carp and an enjoyable evening. Nuisance carp ? No not really.

Sounds like a good evenings sport & a good report too.
