Once the sun has gone down

I had a nice evening session on the local stream (upper Lea) last night.
The stream was very low and clear however two anglers who had been fishing all through the day said that the small to medium Roach and Chub had been feeding on and off all day with a couple of Carp cruising up and down occasionally. One of these anglers was still asleep when I arrived signifying what an exciting day he had had.

The Roach swim showing how low and clear the water now was.

First Cast at just after 5pm I had this lovely Roach of 1lb 14oz.
It looked like it had had a tussel earlier in its life; probably with a Heron but it was quite healthy now and put up a good fight.

The 1lb 14oz Roach

The water was very low and clear but I knew I would have a Barbel once the temperature had dropped and the sun had started slipping away.

Then at around 8pm I had my first Barbel which I weighed thinking it was around the 7.5lb to 8lb mark, but it turned out to be just 6lb 15oz but still a nice barbel nontheless.

The first Barbel (6lb 15oz)

In the last hour between 9pm and 10pm I had four smaller Barbel around the 4.5lb and 5.5lb mark except for the last one which was only around the 1.5lb mark and tried to take my rod for a swim as I was packing up..

The tiny 1.5lb Barbel which nearly dragged my rod in.

I also had a few chub but non over 1.5lb.

So even in these hot sweltering days you can still have a nice few hours fishing if you adapt to fishing late in the evening.

Re: Once the sun has gone down

Well done Keith, that's a superb result. The roach must of been particularly pleasing, cause for some thought come autumn/winter!

You're right about the timing, I had a short afternoon/evening session down on the Stour yesterday. Nothing at all until about 8:30pm when I finally had a small chub, but then in the next hour & half I had three "wrap rounds" on the tip, missed two and lost what was probably a decent barbel!

That river of yours looks a bit special!

Re: Once the sun has gone down

Catfish, I'm coming down your way for a week at the weekend, I'm going to have a few very early sessions on the Avon at the Sandy Balls camp site near Fordingbridge where the wife and I are staying. I have never fished the Avon before although I have fished on the Stour at Throop a few years ago when my mates and I had a week fishing there.
I'm really lookng forward to it and will be taking my trotting rod and pin plus my Barbel rod & fixed spool reel.
I may not catch a lot but I know I will enjoy trying.
