Sandhurst River Severn Gloucester

Well a good friend of mine (Neil) gave me a txt and said it was about time we hit the river Severn to see what was about so after sorting my kit out we were off.

Now the River Severn around my area had a massive flood two years ago which put most of the valley under water for 10s of mile (including my house twice! ). So we were both interested to see what on earth was left there after the big floods.

The plan for the day what Neil to fish open end swimfeeder with ground bait hemp onto a hook length of 3 foot on a size 16 hook and double maggot. Me I was going for the relaxing fish of Halibut boile mounted on a size 8 wide gauge hook and fling it out and see what happens. Both of us where targeting the far bank under over hanging trees.

We were fishing 2 hours up tide and 3 hours down the tide of which was an 8 meet one.

Neil had a great few hours hooking into skimmer bream and small chub for the first two hours but then the tide turned and with the extra colour it all went a bit quiet.

Myself I landed a PB ! with this 14 foot long tree branch which I must say was chuffed I got it in as it battled with me for 10 mins lol.

So I blanked which was expected and Neil had fun with the silvers. It was good to see that the small fish were there and breeding so the only way is up for the Lower River Severn.

Nothing better then a cracking day with a mate with the p==s take flying.

That's not a branch, it's a specimen "PERCH". Birds use them all the time!


I've fished the Severn a few times since the massive floods and it's amazing how quickly things return to normal.

How many points for the 'Perch', but is it a true perch, I see no stripes on its flanks....
Seriously good to hear the fish are breeding after all the flooding, ironically I was on the phone to someone whose house was alos flooded shortly beore reading your post.
