| The fighting sticklebacks of the Sussex wetlands.Part 2 The three-spined (see report for the 2007 Species Hunt) was hard enough to locate, but the ten-spined was fiendish! 10-spined live in similar country to the 3-spined, but prefer a slightly different habitat. Whereas the 3-spined will tolerate quite shallow water, the 10-spined likes slightly deeper water, especially if Norfolk reeds grow in the water. One reason is that the 10-spined rarely builds its nest on the bottom, but attaches it to reed stems about a foot up. So it prefers a total depth of about three feet. All this I have had to glean over the years - the usual field guides are not a lot of help. At long last I found some, and catching one did not take long. Here he is, with a size 24 hook used in the capture. ![]() Should he go in the 2010 species list (along with charr and bitterling) ? Stone and spined loach too ! Catching these tiddlers is easy once they are located, but locating them in the first place will test your naturalist's skills to the utmost. __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |

| Re: The fighting sticklebacks of the Sussex wetlands.Part 2 Yes - but I am sure they are much commoner than is usually thought. They are almost always overlooked and are not caught because no-one fishes where they live. I must be the only angler who would fish with a quarter of a bloodworm on a size 24 hook, in the middle of a dense bed of Norfolk reeds ! Lest you think I only fish for sticklebacks, here is a picture of my previous target fish. ![]() __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |
