First river session this season I called Steve on Tueday to see if he fancied a trip to the Bristol Avon on Thursday, a new river stretch our club leased for the first time this year. We arranged to meet at Steve’s house at 6.30am so he could drive, as I didn’t know the way there, so a quick re-loading of cars and we arrived about 7:20am. Matt was there the day before and was so kind to pre-bait the weir with a KG of trout pellets for me, as I wanted to see if there was any barbel hanging around. Steve fished right at the weir pool and was soon in to a few good perch ![]() I fished a bit further downstream, put a feeder rod out with 2x 8mm trout pellets as bait on a “12 hook and a cage feeder with soaked 3mm pellets as feed. ![]() I was also fishing a second light feeder rod ( a loan of Steve, thanks), with a maggot feeder and maggots as bait on a “ 14 hook. I had one single big knock on the pellet rod but that’s as far as it went.....on the maggot rod I soon picked up small stuff, perch, dace, chubblings. ![]() ![]() ![]() Around midday the swims were drying up and we moved a bit further downstream, there I only put out the maggot feeder and managed a little chub with my second cast ![]() This time Steve fished next peg downstream from me but turned out to be snaggy with lots of weed, so we decided to take a trip to the Frome, stopping for a bite of lunch on the way up there. Good thing about the stretch at Frome is that you can drive straight up to your swim (ideal for lazy people like me lol) My swim ![]() Steve decided to fish the pole upstream from me, I set up the maggot feeder again as it was a bit blowy but also set up a float rod with my centrepin just in case the wind would die down. Maggot feeder rod went out with “ 16 hook and single red maggot, which instantly got sucked off by minnows and gudgeon. Then I managed to pull in this little blighter which I thought was a gudgeon but having a closer look at the pic not too sure now...it has a barbel (but then again my eyesight is not the best any more lol) ![]() Whilst Steve had a power snooze the wind calmed down and out came my float rod and plenty of gudgeon, minnows and chubbling were caught. 5pm arrived and we decided to head off home, a lovely day out on the river again at last, not massive fish caught but a very pleasant day out. __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving

Re: First river session this season I hope we did not over do the bait. One ting I will say is that think the chub like to be in the shade during the heat of the day. There were several under the bridge when I went on a pre opening day recce. Well done on the Gudgeon.

Re: First river session this season A little bit late, sorry! Claudia asked me I would like to join her at the new Stretch of the river Avon at Foxham nr Chippenham last Friday. Well a chance to fish the river was always going to get a “yes.” We arranged to meet at mine and left at 6:30am by 7:30 we were there and set up to fish the weir. ![]() Both Claudia and I caught at the weir but only for a couple of hours, I had some nice perch ![]() In addition, I even managed 1.5 points with catching a Bleak ![]() As the day wore on the bites became fewer. So I thought it might be better to move we found ourselves on a bend, I thought would fish well but I found a huge bed of weed, we gave this ½ an hour so and suggested that we move to another venue, so we set of for the river Frome at Farleigh Hungerford. Well on arrival we found ourselves being the only ones there, we set ourselves up and started to fish. Claudia caught some species for the hunt, but I only managed two small fish, a minnow and a small chub. The day went to Claudia for the species hunt. Over all a good day and I am looking forward to fishing the river again. __________________ Born to fish made to work
