Reels on wheels charity match Reels on wheels charity match As some of you already knew Mike and I booked to attend this charity match last year. Due to some circumstances Mike could not make it so Steve offered to join me, as it would have been a waste to let the place go, especially as we already paid for it last year. Steve offered to drive, as he also had a trailer so we could fit both of our gear in....needless to say, I was well chuffed, as it would save me fuel money and with my current situation being a ‘lady of leisure’, (not out of choice though ), every penny counts. Steve arrived at my house about 5.30am, we loaded my gear up and by 6am we were on our way. Now some may think setting their sat nav to the fastest route get’s you there quicker but it’s not always the case, although you get to see some lovely countryside and being stuck in a traffic jam on the M25 didn’t help neither. So we arrived around 9.30ish, after stopping off for some breakfast. We were welcomed by Nick and Claire the organisers ,just to find out that the match started at 12 o’clock, not 1pm as I thought. So after drawing our pegs and partners to pair up with, Steve and I made sure the bivvies went up first in case it would start to rain again. I was lucky enough to draw a peg on the main lake but Steve wasn’t as lucky and drew a peg on the snake lake. My peg ![]() Lake view to left and right ![]() ![]() My plan for the day was to set up my margin pole, one feeder rod and one waggler rod. As it happened though I only managed to set up my pole before the match started. Bait of the day were maggots, sweet corn and fine chopped luncheon meat but no matter how hard I tried I could not buy a bite if my life would depend on it, so I ended the match with a total blank, along with other 8 anglers. Not to worry there is always tomorrow and I was looking forward for the ‘get together’ in the evening for a BBQ. Reels for wheels headquarters ![]() And the summer house ![]() Once I had some food I started to feel really tired and settle down for the night very early, whilst some of the anglers carried on fishing for a while. I woke up at 6am and was refreshed and ready to conquer the lake on today’s match....I had no doubt that I wouldn’t make it in the first 10 places but taking part, helping to raise money for a good cause and making new friends was worth all the effort. The match started at 9am til 2pm, so I had plenty of time to set everything up I needed i.e. mixing the groundbait, riddling the maggots etc. 9am and the horn signalled the start of the match and I decided to fish the waggler first as there were signs of silver fish around. About 1.5-2hrs in to the match the heaven opened and it really started to pour it down. Now I did not have my brolly with me so only a water proof jacket and my bib prevented the worst....to begin with lol. I just unhooked a little roach when I heard a voice next to me asking how the fishing is going, I turned around, water from my baseball cap leaking in to my face and there he stood, Sir Mick Brown in person. At this time it wasn’t the rain that dripped on me but me drooling over Mick lol. I forgot I was suppose to carry on fishing the match and got involved in a very nice conversation with this lovely man for about 20 mins before he moved on to the next pegs, speaking to every individual angler, despite the rain pouring of him too. Anyway, the bites of the silver fish soon dried off and after catching a pasty on the waggler too I decided to change over to the feeder, as the rain was coming down really thick and heavy. I wasn’t sure how Steve was getting on at the snake lake but our lake spit up some lovely lumps up to 12-14lb, sadly not to me though lol but Seb a young lad in a wheelchair was doing very well for himself and managed one of the biggest carp of the day of just over the 12lb mark, the lad is a darn good angler in my opinion. Well, to cut an even longer story short.....I only eight in 9lb in total, of which 1lb and a few oz were in silver but I was happy enough to have caught at least a few fish and not ended up with another blank. By the end of the match I was soaked to the bones and the first thing I did was getting changed in to dry clothes and whilst I was waiting for the weigh in I already started to pack up. Steve and I then went over for the prize giving and the raffle, which was presented by Mick Brown......during that time we were asked who we would vote for as ‘angler of the day’ and we (like most of the others) voted for Seb, a very devoted angler. Oh and of course I had to get a picture done with one of my favourite angler......as you do ;-) I wonder if he would marry me? lol ![]() I had a great weekend, despite getting soaking wet and shivering so much that I could barely hold my rod. It was a real eye opener for me to see how well the people with a disability adapt to the sport and what good anglers they are, they all earn our greatest respect. Thank you to Claire and Nick (and all the others) who made this weekend happen. __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving

Re: Reels on wheels charity match Congratulations to both of you for the worthy cause. Shame about the weather! I've met Mick Brown a couple of times and he's a really nice guy, plenty of time for everyone. I last met him on Throop last year, he stopped and said "hello again" and yet it was over a year before we last met! He's just a straightforward sort of bloke and a damned good angler. Again, well done. __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe

This year I'm really undecided. Should it be Haywards Farm, Avington or some other trout water?? __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe |

Re: Reels on wheels charity match We could do a meet on our new section of the Avon? As its a new stretch of river, it would be more interesting perhaps? I'll be going up there ro take some pics soon, have not forgotten my orders to prebait certain swims............

Re: Reels on wheels charity match You just make sure my swim will be pre-baited, never mind all the others lol...we were gonna do a weekend up there anyway but you need to get yourself a bivvy lol __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving

Re: Reels on wheels charity match I have a tent, which should suffice. If not I think I might be able to borrow one, a bed chair is more important, as is lots of food. I'll be taking a sickle along when I go up, to clear some swims.
