40 minutes I had house guest,Nick and Zoe from fire foods, who were exhibiting our spring chilli event, Nicks an experienced carper, having spent days ina bivvy on some hard lincs/notts waters. I had told him about HIgher fram, which has been appearing on the forum abit recently, and he joumped at the chance to have a go. He had never cast a fly rod in his life, and he was up for the challenge. First cast, he hooked and lost a nice common, about 5lb, then a few minutes later he laned a smaller fish, he seemed fine, so I left him and made my way don to the lower lake, to renew my aquintance with the beasties in there. I got the fish feeding pretty quickly, and managed on of the newly stocked little one about 2lb. A few minutes later I had a hard fighting 5-6lb common, which took a while to land. About 10 mins later, I stuck into a better fish, which turned in a much better fish. It ran allover tha place, took all the fly line from the reel and I had to run after it and wind in, I had plenty of backing, but prefered to play the ish with the fly line on the reel, worry that the junction would be a weak spot. 4 times it had me down to the backing, and 4 times I got it back, I was getting some of usual banter, which subsided after a while when folk realise dit was a serious fish. Sadly all i got to see was its tail, which must have been at least 20cm. I have seen one big upper double common in the lake, and think I had him on the go for 40 min, and my arm was aching. I'll be going back soon, with revenge in my heart. I imagine that 40 mins of pressure on the hook weakend its hold. JP, Jolly Piscator was one of a series fo witness's, I'll post some photo's when they get e-mailed down. when the beast came off, well you could have heard a pin drop. Oh well, Sh*t happens

Re: 40 minutes Sounds like you had a good session, however I am a bit concerned when you say you have played a fish for 40 minutes. I can only imagine what sort of stress it must have gone through in that time. In my opinion you should aim to tackle up to target the quary you are after. Think of the largest fish you are likely to come across and look to land it within 10 minutes of hooking it. Any more and you are likely to kill it with stress. Having been a professional fishing guide for a number of years, I have seen the negative side too often. __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk

Re: 40 minutes Never mind Matt.....I'm sure you will get the lump next time...I hate to think what it would feel like to hook a big fish on the fly, was quite surprised how well a 3lb trout fights and putting a good bend in your rod. Might have to try carp (small) next, just for fun ![]() __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving

Re: 40 minutes I would like to point out that I think I was tackled up for the expected fish, the average size of the carp in that pool is 4-5lb. I use a a 6lb leader, normal float fishing line, no tapered fly leaders. I have had hard fighting carp to just under 10lb on the bank in under 10 minutes, more like 6 or 7. The beast I hooked was just so powerful. My PB is a 17lb, that I got in with an 8lb hook length, albeit on a more powerful rod in under 5/6mins. I know the owner had been talking about getting some bigger fish to go in the pool, some smaller ones have also been stoked recently, so maybe I latched onto something we did not know about?
