| I finally did it whopp whopp Neil arranged a mini meet to go fluff chucking at Haywards trout farm, so I took the chance by it’s tail and joined in. Still not managed my first fish on a fly (three attempts and failed) so was hoping to break my duck this time. Slight show at bottom of page My friend PJ was so kind to offer me a lift as he was going too, so happy days, knowing I could have a pint or two at lunchtime. PJ and I arrived around 8.30ish to find Neil was first on the scene....soon after Simon, Sue and Colin arrived. A quick dash in to the tackle shop on site (and what a tackle shop that is....hugeeeee) to purchase a few more needed flies and off to find a nice swim. I followed Neil and PJ like a puppy dog, as I had no idea where to go or what to do lol. Sue and Colin have already started whilst we were still tackle tarting and Sue already had her first fish and lost another. I was so busy trying to practice my none existing casting skills when Simon already catching one fish after the other. Neil also done well straight away and soon had his brace of fish to take home. We all decided on the sports ticket, 2 to take home then carry on fishing on the C&R lake next door. Next in line was PJ with a cracking 5lb5oz rainbow which shot of like a rocket. Me, well, I still couldn’t cast my line in a straight line, never mind trying to get it out far enough. PJ and Neil assisted me as much as they could by casting out for me a few times and with tips on casting.....and I’m still rubbish lol. An hour or so later, we decided to move swims where it wasn’t quite so shallow, the spot where Neil and Simon fished before. I was determined to catch my first fish on the fly and got a bit frustrated that I just couldn’t get my cast right, even though I knew where I went wrong but wasn’t able to correct it. I was fishing on with a type of goldhead fly on a floating line but decided to change it to a wet fly, a huge orange looking thing lol, because you could see the fish jumping everywhere, so I thought maybe a slow sinking fly thingy might do the trick. I still didn’t manage to cast far or straight but at least I managed to get in to deeper water. I kept casting and re-casting but nothing and I was just about thinking of moving swims...when Bang!!!! A nice rainbow followed my fly in as I was retrieving and obviously took the liking to my big orange fluffy fly. This time I wasn’t going to make any mistakes, I wanted that fish and I wanted it badly. I heard people saying how much fun they have when catching a trout on a fly, as they give a darn good account for themselves and I was just about to find out what they were talking about. This little fish went off like a rocket and all I could hear was the ratchet screaming away, what a joy. Soon I manage to land my very first fish on a fly, anice rainbow of 3lb3oz and I was happy as Larry, although I had to ask PJ to clobber it with a priest, as I still can’t do that bit. I managed to hook in to another fish and almost had it in the net but sadly lost it...bizarre thing was once the fish managed to get off the hook it went belly up, first I thought it might come around a bit but sadly it must have exhausted itself so much that it died. I could see the fish in the clear water but couldn’t get to it.....I felt bad. PJ lost another 2 fish and all the others were already on the C&R lake as they all had their brace. Lunch time arrived and we headed off to the pub down the road for a bite to eat and a pint or two.....as you do of course. Returning to the lakes and hour later I was hoping to catch my second fish of the day and so was PJ. We decided to move further up the lake whilst the others went back to the C&R one. I lost another 2 fish and also watched a few following my fly in but I never did connect in to another after that, even though Simon came over to sit with me for a while and done a few further casts for me. PJ also lost one more fish and around 5.30pm we decided to call it a day, as by now my shoulders were killing me and I started to get blisters on my fingers lol. So we all headed off back to back for another swift pint and to present the trophy (which was kindly donated by Neil) to the winner of the most fish caught.......and surprise surprise Neil took it back home with him as the winner with 5 fish caught in total. Well done Partner. An awesome day had by all, thank you Neil for organising another cracking fish-in Please see the slight show for piccis slight show __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving |
