| Another few hours on the staffs worcester. Went for a couple more hours on the staffs worcester (BAA at Swindon). Changed swim this time and went just a little further up from last time as the grass margin was a little wider and I had the girls with me this time. ![]() Set them up on 4 m whips (the main channel is around there so that worked out quite good) and I set up my ancient Ian Heaps pole. Was starting on bread but I completely muffed up the initial feed and bites were slow. Thinking about it this probably isn't the best method to use with kids anyway as I always think this is a method that relies on accuracy. Still Amy got the ball rolling by catching a gudgeon , then Molly , then me.Switched them over to maggot quite quick as it was obvious I'd made such a hash of the initial feed this just wasn't going to work out. Amy bought in a steady stream of gudgeon, probably ended up with about 20, which for a six year old keeps their attention. She lost what I reckon was at least a 1lb roach right at the dying seconds. Molly had fewer fish but they were bigger. Her new PB roach now stands at 1 pound and it was quite a feat on a 4m whip to 1.7 bottom. She later lost what I think may have been another 1lb+ roach. The was only slightly dissapointed that the fat Welsh pillock forgot the camera AGAIN!I ended up with an enjoyable mixed bag of gudgeon, roach (best a clone of Mollys 1 pounder and as I can't remember what my previous biggest weighed one is I am going to set that as my PB from now on) , perch and a small dace or two. The good news, Amy likes fishing again. Attention span of a maggot. She is only six though so that was my fault really. Colour of maggot had little difference this time . Boat traffic was very light and I think this did slightly slow sport down. My attitude to boats on the canal is basically that the canals were built to carry boats not as a recreational facility for anglers. The fact that now we are all (mostly) recreational users means we need to be tolerant of each other so I quite like seeing the boats and the owners and users round here seem really friendly. Of course their will always be the minority of idiots in any past-time and ours is especially full of them (ammo bait packets, line wrapper round rocks, halibut pellet packets stuffed in hedges, dead unwanted fish dumped, I could go on) , but on the whole it all seems to work quite well.Even the cyclists round here are reasonably civil (mostly). I've noticed a bit of fish movement between the far bank and a row of dead reeds so I might have to experiment with getting a bait over there. Problem will be getting the fish back out though so I need to find a gap or try getting them feeding at the accesible end. hmm! I think they are carp but they might be chub crashing food off the surface or even pike. The flanks that I have seen though do suggest carp. Not big, but they are still fun to go after , we'll see as time goes on.Ah well, the wife has decided it's too nice a day to stay in so we're off for a walk. I'll leave you to guess where we are going . "Pete, why have you got all that bread in your pockets, you don't like ducks (raw)" Everyone have a great few days, looks like the weather is going to be great. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |
