| Fly Fishing at Revels As I have had a week off this week, I was determined to get some fishing in and having won a days fishing at Revels on Ebay I thought this was the perfect time to take it. Revels is better known as a course fishery situated in the heart of the lovely Dorset countryside. A couple of years ago they added a couple of trout lakes to their line up. I know that Greenheart has fished there before and had some success. I was looking forward to it as I was going with my fishing buddy Elliot (DB,DB) who is a pretty good fly fisherman. We took a quick trip to the reception to find out what had been catching and top up on the same said flies. As the water tempretures were still down Gold head nymphys were still the order of the day. I also bought a 1/2 pint of maggots as one of our Dorchester club waters was right next door to the Trout lakes and I fancied trying it to increase our points tally for the species hunt. I have to say that when we arrived at the lakes conditions were perfect. We had a slight wind pushing from the South West. We started of fishing the top lake and worked our way down to the bottom of the lake. Within 10 minutes Elliot was into the first fish of the day. A lively Rainbow that fell to a Montanna. ![]() Elliot decided to taunt me by saying that he was going to kick my ass, and catch more and bigger fish than me. I think that may have been his kiss of death, because as soon as I had changed to a Montanna I was also into a Rainbow. This time it was a good bit bigger. Not massive at all but at 2 1/2lb it was perfect for the BBQ. This was quickly followed by another and then another. I could see that Elliot was getting a little peeved by this stage as he had not had another knock by the time I had what initially appeared to be small Rainbow on my rod. This turned out to be a Roach, much to my surprise and delight. It was the first time I had caught a Roach on the fly. It must have been my lucky day because I managed another two on the fly during the day. After another couple of Trout for me, it was time to head back to the car and some lunch. I had parked the car next to the club water, so i thought it would be interesting to see if anything would respond to a handfull of maggots. As soon as I threw them in the water boiled with fish. I don't think that there had been much fishing or feeding of that lake for a while. I quickly set up my float rod with a single maggot on a size 14. Instantly it was hit by a small Roach, then another. We could see that there was Rudd and Bream amonst the Roach but they were a bit more difficult to hook before the Roach grabbed the bait. However I was able to hit into a shoal of Rudd to add some more points to our hunt. ![]() I was tempted to stay and go for a Bream but Trout beckoned once more. I returned back to the Trout lake that Elliot had been fishing whilst I was tidler bashing. Unfortunatly he had not managed to get another Trout. I think that hooking into one on my first cast of the afternoon session pushed him over the edge!! It was one of those days that I couldnt go wrong. Almost every other cast produced a fish, much to Elliots frustration. At four we decided to call it a day. I had managed 12 Trout and 3 Roach on the fly to Elliots one Trout. I think my near death encounter occured when I asked to try his rod and had a take on the first cast with it. I quickly handed it back to him in fear of physical violence. At 6ft something Elliot is much bigger and scarrier than me :-) At the end of the day we both had enjoyed a great day out and it just proved to be my day. We are both out on Top Cat tomorrow, a Weymouth charter boat. I am sure that DB,DB will triumph over me then (not). __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk |
