Cotsworld water

I had planned to be a good girl and stay home at the weekend to finish sorting my fishing gear out. However, Saturday evening I had a call from a friend, asking if I would like to join him on his last fishing trip before he is moving abroad.

Well, I wouldn't be a good mate if I would have refused, also it would give me the opportunity to fish a new venue.
So I quickly gathered some gear ready to set of Sunday morning.

The venue was a lake at the Cotsworld waters, about an hours drive from my home, so an early start was required.
I arrived at the lake about 8am and my friend Mal was already there since the night before, carp fishing.

I however decided to fish the lake behind the carp lake, which held smaller carp, tench, bream, perch, rudd roach and pike.

Mal on the carp lake

I took this picture from my seat, so you can see the lakes are right next door to each other.

It was still a bit too windy for float fishing so my set up was my quiver tip with an open end feeder, 6lb mainline (as the lake holds carp lower double figures) 5lb hook length "16 hook.
My chosen baits were maggots, worms, sweetcorn, luncheon meat and a mix of groundbait.

The view of my swim

First cast out to the opposite bank and I had first action on the rod, a little roach came in on maggots.
Another two followed and about an hour later I managed to get a right bend in to my quiver, a lovely tench approx 2-2.5lb fell to maggots too and put up a good fight.

Not long after another tench fell to the same bait, this one was approx 2lb.

Around 10.30am things turned a bit quiet, so I took the opportunity to have some breakfast and a nice fresh brewed cuppa from Mal.

We sat down together having a little natter about everything and nothing...mainly fishing though lol.

I then returned to my fishing but not much was happening, a few knocks but nothing developed in to a bite, so I changed hook size to 12 and put a worm on...maybe I could tempt a nice perch.
I just sat there, enjoying the sunshine, day dreaming away when suddenly I saw my rod shooting forward and nearly ending up in the lake. I managed to grab it last minute, struck and BINGO!!! Fish on!!! Instantly I knew it was a carp and not a bad one neither. It put up a darn good fight and I enjoyed every minute of playing it on the back wind, on light tackle.

It took me around 8 mins to land it, a lovely mirror of 9lb4oz

Quicky weight and some scale damage treatment and soon was returned to sulk.

So another worm put on and another cast close to the reeds on the opposite bank. This time I waited for another half an hour before I had another massive bend in my rod, I struck and connected with the fish....another carp, who took me for a right around my swim...shooting from left to right like a rocket lol.

this time I played the fish for good 10 mins if not more, this one wasn't going to give up without a darn good fight.

Again I really enjoyed playing the fish on light tackle....it's so much fun.

finally I managed to land it and once in the net I called Mal over with the scale, this one looked like a low double to me and once weight my guess was right, a 12lb4oz mirror.

I had some lovely fish and at 4pm I decided it was time to call it a day. I'm planning on returning to the lake for another dabble in the future, maybe take my pole next time.

Re: Cotsworld water

Excellent result and more points for The Hunt (which is good because I've temporarily given up coarse fishing in favour of the trout!), well done!

I've driven past that venue several times, maybe I'll have to stop there next time.

Thumbs up Re: Cotsworld water

Nice report & pics Claudia & a good brace of carp too. Good to hear the Tench are starting to wake up. Looks an interesting fishery too.
