One Blank and One fish- Banna Steve & Twiddler

Well after 2 weeks of negotiations, the Warminster Angling Club managed to secure a good length of the river Avon nr Chippenham. This Saturday I was going to give the river a go with Claudia. I spent the week looking forward to getting out and I had arranged with Claudia to meet at 6:15am
We arrived at the venue at 7:00am the weather was over cast. On getting to the bank we noticed that the river was very clear and low. We decided that we would give the Weir ago for a couple of hours.

Within the 10 minutes things were looking quite good with 2 bites and sucked maggots, I was feeling quite upbeat. Then I had a huge drop-back bite and struck into a fairly heavy fish, plenty of thumping going on, then suddenly the line went slack, had the fish come of? To my disappointment the hook-length had snapped well above the hook, recon there was a weak spot in the line. I wasn’t too chuffed, and that was the start of a bad day. 10 minutes later I had snapped the tip of my rod on a snag, AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, not happy.
Claudia fishing the Weir

We fished the weir till 12:00 and moved on to a nice sweeping bend. I didn’t get any bites there. However, Claudia had a small Chub, Nice one Claudia.

We gave the bend an hour and then moved on to find some deeper water; we got comfortable and settled down for the rest of the day. Well we both tried all sorts of baits. However Claudia had a bite on meat so we both started to use Meat. Claudia had another bite and missed it and I to had a bite, I waited for it develop but nothing came of the bite.

So my first blank of the year oh well! However, the day finished better, with a nice snack and drink at the Long Arms.

Well, what can I say....maybe the fish weren't playing ball but nevertheless a cracking day we had, plenty of laughs and catapulting each other with pellets and maggots lol.

Although I had one of these day were everything seem to go wrong and my usual Anglo Saxon got the better of me once more, much to Steve's amusement lol.

It a lovely river stretch and I'm sure it will produce plenty of fish once the weather will be more stable. The weir is almost screaming fish, even though it's shallow in some places.

I will definitely return there with minimum kit and do some stalking....I'll find the little blighter's

Here a pic of Steve re-tackling after his snap off

The weir

Me concentrating hard on the fishing

And not to forget the hard earned pint at the end of the day

Ohhh and a coke for the ghilly

Thanks for a great day Steve.....I believe the stretch has great potential and once fished more often will also chuck up some clonkers

looks like a cracking stretch of river with a bit of everything fast flowing water with the deeper slower water
looking forward to wetting a line there hopefully theres one or two pike lurking in there.

The fishing may not have been exactly river emptying but the write up and the piccys bought a hell of a smile to my face, thanks!

Sounds like you two had fun even if the fish did'nt show. Sorry I could'nt join you. I'm really looking forward to trying that bit of river next season as i'm sure it has great potential, especially for Barbel.
