Return to Horton's Pond I ventured out today to have another crack at catching some big perch. Armed with some lobworms from the garden and a pint of maggots I braved the freezing weather. After half an hour the float went under and I had a really heavy fish on. I was sure I was about to break my record but alas it turned out to be one very ugly carp. ![]() I rebaited and had a string of decent bream and roach all on worm. ![]() After a couple of hours I had another good fish on and after a short scrap i landed this 3lb 2oz perch. ![]() I spoke to the bailiff on the way back and he assures me there have been two five pounders landed in the last year. I can only hope! I have included a photo of my two lidl fishing reels to prove you can still catch fish on credit crunch gear. They are incredible for £4.50 each!! I will be going again soon!! ![]() ![]()

Re: Return to Horton's Pond Well done on the catch, looks like a good day out in the cold. And the gear does not need to be expensive, as long as you have good hooks and line ( some of the cheap hooks are vicious and the line is liable to break leaving tackle in fish ). I have caught some nice fish on cheapy rods and reels, and get just as much fun ( if not more ) from it. Look forward to seeing how you get on next time. __________________ Life is understood looking backwards, but it must be lived forwards.

Re: Return to Horton's Pond Good point about terminal tackle, i never scrimp on that. In fact, it's worth spending the money you save on rods, reels etc on buying top hooks and line.

Nice Perch mate. And as for the reels, like my missus always says, the tackles not important, it's how you use it that matters.... ![]() __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey... Last edited by Greenheart; 11-30-2008 at 08:54 PM.

Re: Return to Horton's Pond A cracking good perch! Dick Walker used to say that a big perch is the biggest fish there is. Well done! __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond
