Britford, the report

Bananna Steve & myself decided to fish the river Avon at Britford near Salisbury this weekend. Steve had fished here before, but this was a new water to me. It's a fast flowing river running through beautiful water meadows & containing a wide variety of fish species including Salmon, Sea Trout, Grayling, Roach, Chub & Pike.

A couple of views of the river & Salisbury Cathederal. Not sure why Constable did'nt include the sewage works in his famous painting....

We met Stuart the Bailiff, who sold us our day tickets & pointed us in the direction of a couple of pegs that had been fishing well. I set up at a spot where a clump of rushes split the river in two & where a few fish were topping. And Steve set up downstream. We both set up stick float rigs & ledger outfits. I fed a few red maggots & cast a stick float baited with a single maggot just down from the reeds. First cast produced a nice Grayling & this set the pattern for the next few hours. Grayling, small Chub, Brown trout & even a couple of Rainbow Trout & a Sea Trout. As bites dried up on the float i'd alternate with the quivertip to start getting bites again.

A downstream wind was making fishing very difficult. Autum was very much in the air with leaves blowing from the trees & hundreds of geese migrating south...

Steve was finding things difficult downstream & could'nt temp any Grayling, but was hooking (And losing) a few better size Chub. He also had a good sized Seatrout & a beautifully marked perch. However it was an enjoyable day & we both finished up as darkness fell with a few fish in the net.

These photos don't include the Grayling or Trout that we caught as fishery rules forbid retaining these species in keepnets.
Steve also managed one of my target species "Salmon Parr" for some species hunt points. Steve ended the day with two new species & me with one.

Very nice, we should have gone with you, butr sods law meant I was working sat morning.
Might try to get down there at some time, any idea when you'd like to come down to the Brue?

Possibly weekend after next Matt if the rivers in form & the FPO gives me a pass....
