| Not so ruffe for some of us Well with France approaching at fast rate, and with money a little tight, both Greenheart and I decided that we would go off on a Great White Ruff hunt on the canal at “All Cannings” in Devizes. We arrived at the canal at 9am and with a brisk walk we found ourselves two fishy swims. With the forecast being rain and wind, we found ourselves a little miffed with the glorious sun ![]() However, this did not last that long and slowly the clouds and wind moved in. Ian was the first to start catching; he fished the pole to the far bank and was getting some good quality roach. He also lost two good fish as he pulled out of them. Mean while I was struggling, I started on the tip with my favourite bait “Bacon grill” but this let me down and produced nothing. So I went on the float but this only produced 6 fish. But to absolute amazement one of the fish was a Ruffe. ![]() Well I couldn’t resist I had to tell everyone via text and I had to tell Ian, who then took the bit between the teeth and started fishing with a high amount of grit. This resulted in more roach and a Ruffe, but “wait” I hear you say Ian didn’t catch one, That’s True, the fish fell of as he was playing the mighty beast. For I saw it strip elastic from his pole and the wake of the great beast fins tore through the canal, then nothing as the waters calmed and the pole came to rest, I hear a quite cry form the Greenheart him self. “Bugger it” We fished till 4:30, Ian did well and caught a fair few fish and out fished me. ![]() Ian putting his pole away in disgust We stopped of at nice country pub, were I treated Ian to a pint. Mind you 1 pint of Beer and a Tom Juice and 2 Packets of Crisps with a Pickle egg each came £8.70 Took me a bit by surprise, so the only winner that day was the Landlord. __________________ Born to fish made to work |

| Re: Not so ruffe for some of us Welcome to the club Ian. For me Ruffe = Ray. Can't get one for love nor money. I've decided that it's not meant to be and have just been concentrating on the hounds and the Bass this summer. Maybe you should try a "not a Ruffe" hunt and see if you can catch something you completely *not* after. ![]() Good report Steve, but I've got to question this tomatoe jucie marlarky. What's that all about? That's just not fishing man! ![]() __________________ Right then, checklist: Rods. Check. Reels. Check. Speckled Hen. Check. Bait…… BAIT! Sh*t, where’s the bait? |
