Roach Fishing Today

Well because it was a free week of my holidays and i was determined to more fishing by the end of them i decided to go fishing down the canal 5 mins away

started fishing about 1 o'clock today and set up with a size 16 barbless hook with a single maggot nothing to interesting apart from small roach kept fishing until about 3:45 and then the rain came on and fishing slowly halted and we decided to call it a day

Heres a pic of the biggest small Roach (but its still points i suppose)

Craig

Re: Roach Fishing Today

Well done Craig, next time you go try fishing a smaller hook, I know it sounds strange, but when roach fishing the better ones tend to shy away from the shine of the hook and if you are using say a 20 the maggot will camouflage the hook and you may get the better fish, also lighten down on your hook length, try using 2lb bottom with a 0.12mm diameter ohh one more tip, feed little and often flick a few {6 to 10 }maggots around the float every 30 sec to a minute, this will also attract the better fish as they get used to the feed going in, ohh and one more thing {I know I can't count} try shotting the float down so the tip is just showing. Fish the float with the heavy shot locking the float and use small shot down the line i.e. no8 and no 10's

I Have included a diagram I did on a basic float set up, I hope this helps. Good luck on catching roach again as they can be great sport on light tackle, and they are one of my favourite fish

Steve

Re: Roach Fishing Today

I've often found that the better roach feed in lower light, with the real beasts comming on at dusk. Well done anyway.
