| Fantastic three hours. I almost did'nt go, I got to the end of the village, when I rembeered that I had left unhooking mat at home, so I spun 'round and got it. When I was unloading in the car park I realised I had also forgotton my inhaler, (astma). But i decided to bravely soldier on, and I'm so glad I did. I had some fun at the lake last sunday, but lost a beast onthe pole, so i chose the same area of bank, settling in to no 15. I had left the pole at home, on of the downsides to this side of the lake is the late afternoon sun which does get you in the eyes. It also occoured to me that in almost 6 years of membership, this was the first trip I had made to the lake with 'proper' carp tackle, instead of the lighter rods aimed at roach and tench, with any willing carp a bonus. Rod 1 was my J Wilson Avon Quiver, with the avon top on, rod 2 was a shiomano 2lb perfection. ![]() I chose to fish rod 1 with a small waggler, fixed with a float rubber at the base, and a free running 1/4 arsley bomb above the swivel. Hook was a 10 raptor, bait was a chunk of Lidl's Bacon Grill. This went to the left, rod 2 went to my right with a standard bold rig, bait was 2 Crab and Mussel dumbells. After a few minutes, the float dipped, I struck and there was nothing there, I added a few micri halibut pellets and a few minutes it bobbed then shot away. The avaon top had its first proper work out and after a fantastic scrap my first double from Crockerton graced my landing net. ![]() I was on cloud nine, but went up a level when the scales read 13.10.0 after deducting the weight of the net. A few minutes later I heard the line mooving through the rings of rod no 2, then the gentle click of the reel, ( I hate bite alarms); I picked up the rod which bent double, the result was a lovely mirror of 9.8.0. I returned that one, and within thrity minutes added a brace of tench, one on the dubells and on on meat, one fish was just under 4lb, the other just over. As the sun was getting lower I had another fish on the dumbells, that was my second double from the lake, I kept it in the net and asked an angler a few swims away to do a photo. He kindly bouhgt his rods in and came over. ![]() I had been thinking of packing up, I needed the inhaler, and was worried that the sessiojn would go downhill and I would wind up with a bream.... My next cast with the float rig, and I thought the float had slipped, so quickly did the float sink away, I lifted the rod and it bent double and a fish shot out into the middle of the lake. The avon held a lovely curve and was aj oy to use, as I began to see the fish my pulse began to quiken, and I was delighted when it went over the net. I was hopeful of a new p.b, my existing one was 16.6.0 from Little Shearwater, the net weighs 2.8.0, and when the scales went round to 19.8.0 I new I had done it! I must apologise to Banana Steve here, he has done some serious time at Crockerton, and faioled to go over the 16lb mark, and I did it on mey first attempt. ![]() I took this fish round to the sma echap who snapped the one earlier who kindly obliged. |
