A day on the Frome

Both Greenheart and I had arranged to fish the Frome today. Both Ian and I arrived at the river at Farleigh Hungerford at around 8:30. The river was in top condition, just the right amount of flow, and nice colour as well.

Both our swims looked fantastic, and so began the days fishing. I started on the maggot feeder, with my Silstar 10ft wand using a small maggot feeder and a size 16 barbless hook. My first cast put me straight into an underwater snag. So I re-set up and this time avoided that area. I started by catching the odd minnow and small dace and this continued for an hour or so. I then swapped over to the pole and at 8mtrs I feed some small pieces of meat. I left this for 20 minutes or so and then went back to the pole, on the 3rd trot through the float slid away to produce a nice Chub of 2lb or so. As the day progressed I swapped from the rod to the pole and found some nice fish on both. My best fish of the day, and now my personal best a Chub of 3lb 8ozs.

In total I caught 4 chub and they all gave a good count of themselves. As the day progressed the bites slowed right down, so I dared my self to fish an area that looked full of snags

So I chucked the feeder into the area, and to my luck produced 3 quality perch biggest at around 1.5lb.

At the end of the session Ian and I weighed in, Ian caught 8lb and I had 13.9ozs both of us had a really good day.

And finally does anyone want to add a caption for this photo

I must stop bringing everything, including the kitchen sink

Re: A day on the Frome

No coments on the above pic, revenge is a dish best served cold... However it was a cracking days fishing, made even more interesting when we discovered that we were fishing on the site of next weeks Village Pump folk festival. This gradually dawned on us as various other cars & people arrived & cordoned off the area including Steves car & started to erect tents & marquees etc. We also had to contend with the local river swiming club splashing about in the next field down & a few canoes & rubber dingys paddling through our swims. However I assume the fish are used to all this going on as it did not appear to affect their appetite. I did manage to get two of my three target species for the Forum species hunt. Dace & Minnows. However the bleak were still conspicious by their absence. In total we caught 6 species... Chub, Dace, Perch, Roach, Minnows, & Steve did manage one Bleak. Here's a few more pics....

My Chub, best fish 3lb

My Swim. If you look closely, you can just see the local swimming club changing room. (Must remember my Binoculars next time...)
Another view of my swim with a fine example of a himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) plant to the right of the picture.

A view of Steves swim, with some fine examples of
Great Willow-Herb (Epilobium Hirsutum) in full bloom.
