Sharpness Canal Gloucester pole fishing

Sharpness Canal Gloucester

Well had the Monday off for a change and decided to give the old bend at sharpness canal Gloucester ago.

Weather was going to be showers all day with gusting wind but hay I needed to fish so off I went to spend a few hours wetting a line.

Now this area has under gone some big changes a year and a bit ago and was re routed so that a new bridge could be fitted. The results were that the once bend in the canal has been straightened out ( causing to inlets which do fish well ).

So as I’m not the greats canal fisherman in the world my hopes were not that high of bagging up but gave it a go.

I would be fishing on the pole on2lb main line down to 1lb hook length onto a size 20 hook fished with maggot. Loose feed would be maggots and some hemp seed. Another go method on this stretch of canal is fishing a feeder to the far bank.

I decided to fish just by the new bridge and on the new stretch of canal. This turned out to be dead flat bottom at about 17 foot deep.

Well talk about hard going!! In three hours all I had managed was two eels and two skimmer bream. But I was enjoying it so stuck it out for two more hours resulting in about 20 Dace that I took on the drop. Once they died off and a bit wet and wind swept I called it a day.

Just never been able to crack canal fishing but as it has very easy access will go back and try again.

Nice Report and good to see you get some fishing in.
You can't beat fishing the canal for a few hours for some smaller species, it's real fun.

Thumbs up Re: Sharpness Canal Gloucester pole fishing

At least you caught a few Rich. I driven over that bridge a fair few times & often wondered how it would fish. Been meaning to give it a try for Zander sometime.

Nice one Richard, three of us on Saturday could only manage an eel and one roach, about 8cm . We were at Rea Bridge.
