Bradford Upon Avon an eel of a time Earlier in the week, Greenheart invited me to fish with him on the river on the Wednesday, well I jumped at the chance and at 8:15am I was at Ian’s door waiting to go fishing on the river. We arrived at the river at around 9:30 after a quick visit to “West’s Tackle” in Trowbridge to pick- up our bait. The day even though it was overcast it was very humid. The stretch we decided to fish was a section of the Avon in Bradford upon Avon that used to be a free stretch, but since a exclusive housing estate went up a few years ago the fishing has gone over to the residents. However, I managed to secure permission to fish the stretch, so that’s where we headed. The banks are quite steep and there are only a few pegs that can be fished. However Ian and I managed to find two nice little pegs up from the Weir. Ian was to my right fishing upstream from the railway bridge and I down stream from the Weir. View from Ian’s Peg ![]() View from my Peg ![]() Ian was the first to catch, fishing the stick on the far bank; he managed some small roach and chub. It was over an hour before I caught my first fish, a nice roach of 5-6 ozs. I slowly started to catch on the float, when after a couple of hours the rain moved in, so it was on the Feeder. Mean while Ian was catching quite well on the stick but after a while the rain slowed every thing down, the bites dried up but the weather got wetter. By this point we were both on the Tip looking for bites ![]() ![]() Ian was fishing meat and I was fishing maggots. When out of the blue I had ripping bite, as I stuck I felt nothing on the rod, however there was, a small bleak worth all of 1 ½ points. ![]() Ten minutes later I had bagged another 1 ½ points with a freshwater Eel ![]() 20 minutes later Ian informed me that he too had caught an Eel and it to was also worth 1 ½ points. ![]() By 4pm I had been broken up on both my Feeder and Float rods, and I’d had enough and knocked it on the head. I went and sat behind Ian for around Ten minutes as Ian started to slowly pack up, as Ian was talking to me, I noticed his Feeder rod bent double in the rest and on its way the Bristol channel, I shouted at Ian, but as he turned the rod came flying out of the rest and the main line got caught some how and as Ian lunged at his rod and grabbed it the line snapped and tore of down the river. Ian uses barbless like me, so I am certain that the fish will shed the hook. In spite of that Ian had a good day, mind you I did as well with two eels and dozen or so smaller fish, but Ian faired a little better. ![]() __________________ "The muscles of 20 men, and the brains of 20 mussels",

Re: Bradford Upon Avon an eel of a time Nice one. Always great to fish somewhere exclusive. JP and I are of to the Avon tommmow. I'm going to experiment with some paste making. Fingers crossed I get myfirst barbel on the bank too. But I'll settle for a nice chub.

Another excellent day out with Steve, although the strech of river did'nt produce as well as I expected. I was after Bleak, minnow & dace for the species hunt & would have put money on catching them from this swim. In the end I had to settle for a slimey, although good sized eel. I'd have loved to have known what it was that almost took my rod in the river. Probably a big chub or possibly a barbel. Whatever it was snapped 6lb line like cotton... Anyway a great day, rounded off nicely with a pint of Theakstons in the pub... __________________ One man's fish is another man's poissons http://www.deepsea.co.uk http://www.wildtrout.org

Re: Bradford Upon Avon an eel of a time Well done guys, might have been hard(ish) going but at least you collected some points. It could have been a chub or barbel Ian or maybe you had a little minnow/dace on the line without noticing and a jack got hold of it ![]() __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving
