River Ekete Lithuania 23-05-08 With Video

It was another warm sunny day and I woke with the idea to venture somewhere different. So with this new found sense of adventure I made the 40 minute bike ride to the River Ekete at Radailai to fish a back water I had visited only once before and then only in early winter.

On my arrival the water looked very inviting, the margins teamed with tadpoles and the air was filled with the sound of chirping crickets and a chorus of frogs that at times seemed deafening.

I elected to tackle two floats, one on 4LB line straight through to a size 16 hook with the intention of baiting with corn, worm and meat the other 2LB line straight through to an 18 hook baited with maggots dyed bronze using aniseed. I fished the heavier of the two to the lily covered margins with the other fished in a hole at around 2 rods out. I have caught both Tench and Crucian Carp further down in the lake into which the river empties so my ground bait was a mix that particularly targeted those two species.

In reality, as it turned out, the water was more ideal for predator fishing with plenty of small bait fish leaping from the surface followed by swirls or large splashes. This of course had to be the one session I didn’t bring any dead baits or my spinning rod!

The fish came slow and small at first but with time it picked up although on the whole it was small Rudd, Roach and Skimmers coming to hand with little sign of anything larger being present. I did manage one half decent fish, a Bream that may have just struggled to be 12oz but this was to turn out to be yet another day for ‘tiddler bashing’.

I did try spinning using my Carp rod for a short while at the end of the session but in a water filled with snags it was fruitless and I quickly chose to stop before losing any tackle.

So with 230 fish comprising Roach, Perch, Bream, Rudd and Bleak I decided to call it a day and go home for some supper. As always I enjoyed being lucky enough to be out amongst the most incredibly beautiful surroundings and now look forward to my next trip, when I am certain I will be taking my dead baits.

Cheers Twiddler, no close season is one advantage, a national permit that costs around 3 pounds is another as with hardly any club waters I can fish pretty much anywhere I want to venture :)

Good luck for the coming season :)
