Higher Farm, last night

Well, we got to the lake with high hopes, as we got on the bank, one guy was just packing his rods away, ( afootie fan I guess). He told us he had just put back a fish about 14lb, so we got our kit set up. There were a few fish mooving, and the odd take from the surface.
I was keen to try out a new fly rod I had bought for fly fishing for carp with mixers, also chubbing on the rivers, and hopefully a nice perch or two. I had problems getting the mixer to stay on the hook. I think that I'd be best using the partridge artificials in future.
JP had a nice common about 6lb after an hour, a few of the freebies I had cast out had been taken, sadly bno indications of any fishy interest in mine. I recast several times, and finally a dark and menacing shape loomed up, sucking down the mixer, I struck, and there was one hell of a swirl in the water, sadly the hook link went, 6lb to a no 10. I am temped to think I had damaged to knot trying to secure mixers, a lesson learnt there. JP said it was big, I put it at mid double, so you can imaging how I felt.
With no more fish onthe surface, and determined to christen a new rod, I popped up to the top lake, which is over stocked, and dropped a crust on the nose of a nice common about 5lb, who did an impressive jopb of bending my new toy, and giving me some fun.
Then, as is our habit when we fish there, off to the pub

Re: Higher Farm, last night

Well done Matt, I bought a Fly rod for the same reason, yet to try it, where is this fishery you go to?

Regards, Steve

Re: Higher Farm, last night

Its near Shepton montague, Somerset. £3 for an evening. We also head off to the Sun Inn in Bruton afterwards, sausage chips, peas and salad ffor £3.95, (big menu, very good prices).
We'll be going next week if you/anyone would like to join us.

Re: Higher Farm, last night

Unlucky on that big carp Matt. I've been meaning to try Fly Fishing for Carp for a while. Been thinking about trying Rood Ashton lake near Trowbridge.

Re: Higher Farm, last night

Went again to Higher Farm this eve. We started on the lower lake, our fave, but some one who I shall call 'Mr Mallet', was setting up for aserious carpy session, a mallet to get bivvy pegs in, inflating airbed. I like my comforts, but the noise he was making just put the fish off. We were watching the carp patrolling the lake, taking a slurp off the surface every few minutes. As Mr Mallet made noise, they just sank down and disappeared. So we went to the top lake.
I had a great deal of fun, waggler and maggies for an hour. Some nice rudd to about 8oz, little carp to about 1lb. Then some stalking witht he 'pin and crust/mixer. Half a dozen carp to about 5.8.0
As we left to go the pub for grub, we could hear the TV from insdie Mr Mallets bivvy, light blazing outside.
