Morley Quarry

Right trip no three for this year (I don't get out fishing much!) saw me and young Todd (a mate from another forum) going to Morley quarry for a couple of hours.
I had been told by the Bailiff (Nidge) that they were on the feed and that corn was the bait to use. So off to the shop for a nice loaf of bread and two cans of corn. I picked Todd up after school and headed to the quarry. A short detour to see Woody but he wasn't playing so we finally got to the Quarry about 16:00. Nidge came out to show us the best spot and we set up to fish. It started to rain as soon as we started to fish so back to the car for my brolly. As I'm such a nice bloke I let Nidge have a play with my Tackle (as you do! ) and first cast he hooks a nice little Roach! Didn't quite manage to land it though, pesky barbless hooks eh Nidge .
The Quarry is quite sheltered but the wind does get in there and it likes to swirl around making it hard to keep your float in one place.

Well the weather had turned against us and I couldn't buy a bite. Todd was on fine form and was getting a bite a chuck (or dunk in his case as he was on the pole). Roach after Roach was coming out of his swim and I was starting to feel a bit down. It was now 17:45 and I had only had one bite and I missed that! So I went to move the car out to the car park so we wouldn't get locked in when all the staff went home!
When I got back down to my swim I had another text from Nidge with some useful tips and following his advice I shortened my depth to 5' and put some feed in. I found a nice drop off near three large rocks and was soon seeing some more bites none of which I could connect with. At this point I though the only fish I will be getting was going to be on the way home from the chippy!
I changed over from double maggot to chopped worm and straight away I was into something a bit bigger than Todd's Roach. It was giving a good fight and I was trying to keep it out of the rocks. Todd's was up and shouting like he does (oh the joy of youth! ). That's a Carp he was saying. It certainly felt to me like a Carp but I was concentrating on keeping it out of the rocks and on the end of my 3lb line!
Any way it finally came out and it was a lovely little Tinca of about 1lb.

The obligatory BIG HANDS picture!
And then into Todd's keep net. Todd's swim had died down a bit after a couple of small Perch but mine had just started to pick up. I was straight back out and into a very (I mean VERY) small Perch. After that I landed a Roach of about 8oz and then another Tinca. This time it was a bit bigger and just like the last one, it fought hard for a little fish.

He wasn't quite as happy to see me as I was to see him!

After that Todd wanted in on the Tench action and I asked him if he wanted to have a go in my swim! He didn't need asking twice but he had no joy even after half an hour so he went back to his own swim. He finally landed a Tench and we were both happy with the afternoons fishing. What had been intended to be a couple of hours had turned into quite a long session. The rain was on and off all afternoon but we had a great time.
That was it apart from the biggest Perch of the day at about 8oz. It was a nice looking fish, well marked but pale. That was one thing we noticed about all the fish. They were all a bit washed out! I suppose it's because of the water colour in the Quarry!

Here are some more pictures of Todd and the fish!
Roach juggling!

Perch posing!

Tench tampering!

I decided to pack up about 20:30 and head back to the car with my gear so that I could come back down and help Todd with his mountain of stuff. I got to the car and noticed that the gate had not been locked so I stowed my gear and drove back down into the Quarry to save the young feller from a nice steep walk up to the gate. Todd broke down all his gear and then we had our weigh in. We had had about 7.5lb of fish between us and I took a few last shots before leaving.

And they were returned unharmed!

We got all Todd's gear in the car and drove back up to the gate to find some clever sod had locked it! Nice one I thought! Oh well I sent Nidge a Text and above and beyond the call, he came out to us and let us out! Todd did manage to put his foot through the cattle grid at the gate up to his knee in freezing cold, muddy water. This lad is entertaining to the last!

So all in all a great little session. Thanks to Todd for joining me and keeping me entertained throughout! And a BIG thanks to Nidge for putting us on the fish and letting us out! I hope you enjoy the read and I will be going back! £15 for the year to fish with the hope of landing Mirror Carp, Common Carp, Sturgeon, Perch, Roach, Tench! The list goes on and it looks like it would be a great place to fish come the Summer. The big bonus is it's on my way home from work so I could put a couple of hours in any time!

Just out of shot to the right hand side of the first picture, there is a home made bivvy that one of the Quarry men uses! I wouldn't want to try climbing back up that lot with more than a rod!
