For my latest session it was very much a case of being a different day wearing a different ‘T’ shirt fishing in a different swim but in the same weather and with the same result.

Enveloped by a wonderful chorus of bird song and lost happy in my day dream I cycled across open country side to the near end of Lake Ekete to where it tapers into something resembling a Fenland drain. This is the opposite end of the same body of water I had fished just 2 days earlier, catching 345 fish in a 7 hour bonanza that had left my arm aching and my net full.

I have had more bonus fish from this swim than anywhere else I fish in Lithuania so today I was hoping for perhaps a better stamp of fish with the odd surprise or two and on that score at least I was not to be disappointed.

I tackled a stick float fishing hard bottom at around 2 rods out, baiting alternately with maggot died pink with strawberry powder and bronze with aniseed fishing over my usual ground bait mix of bread crumb with roasted and crushed hemp, wheat with vanilla flavor, chopped meat with a hint of garlic flavor and a few maggots.

Immediately it became apparent that this was going to be another of my Granddads ‘tiddler bashing’ sessions as Roach to around 2oz came promptly on every cast. Then just as I was thinking, ‘why do I bother carrying a landing net’, my float sunk away and I was into a better fish. Nothing huge, I estimated maybe a 1LB but hey, it wasn’t a 2oz Roach and as the line cut the water with the fish at first keeping deep I made ready for my first Tench of 2008. Well I did say this swim offers a few surprises and this was to be one of them as when the fish came up I saw not a Tench but a small Pike of around 1LB.

Fishing amongst an abundance of March Marigolds, Cowslips and a host of other blooming wild flowers and with the sun warming my back I then fell into one of those ‘else where’ day dreams and my fishing sort of slipped pretty much into auto pilot awaking only when then sun dropped below the bank behind me signaling it to be time to go and find some supper.

A nice session with an unexpected culprit as my bonus catch. In all I had 224 fish in 4 hours comprising mainly Roach to around 2oz but with the odd bleak and skimmer thrown in. No fishing now until Thursday but my arm could do with a rest!
