21-04-08 River Dane (Klaipeda-Lithuania) Photos Included

It was a beautiful sunny day, pretty much par for recent weeks with only a chill breeze keeping the temperature from being in the 20s. As has almost become customary for my fishing sessions, the day started with a host of problems including yet more bike trouble but I didn’t have far to go and was looking forward to some bank time enough to brush off any troubles.

I arrived at Mosquito bank on the Dane River outside of Klaipeda (Lithuania) grateful to find that for the moment at least the mosquitoes are few and far between, that wont stay the case for long, this venue is extremely aptly named! The water was moving through a reasonable pace considering it has been quite some time since we had any rain but the water was low, perhaps 6 inches below summer levels. To put it into perspective, had I have sat in the position I occupied yesterday during the winter months, I would have been completely under the water!

The session started with small Perch and Roach coming from in tight while I struggled to find bites more than a rod length out, regardless of my feeding pattern. I mixed a relatively heavy ground bait consisting of wheat with vanilla flavor, crushed and chopped roasted hemp, bread crumb, caster and maggot flavored with aniseed. The result was instant with a better stamp of fish coming from around a rod and half to two rods out.

For a while I was catching skimmers from 4oz to 6 oz and Roach 6oz to 8oz almost every cast although once the Bleak arrived it tended to be every third or fourth cast as they intercepted the bait on the drop. Happy to be catching and knowing it is almost impossible to feed off the Bleak in the Dane River, I went with the flow and kept a steady stream of fish coming to hand throughout.

The margins teamed with life, scores of small frogs sat just below the surface waiting to come ashore. On the far bank a Stork waded the margins, perhaps making an easy meal from the swan mussels and snails which can always be found in abundance while king fishers swooped to take small fish from the surface.

In all I managed 101 fish made up of Roach, Skimmers, Perch, Rudd and Bleak. A great outing and I caught the sun so now I am looking forward to my next trip.

Lovely report/pics WA...you can't beat sitting on a river/lake bank, let the sun warm your body, watching the float and the world go by and catching a nice bag of silver.

Perfect chilling day!!!

Nice report, and superb pictures.

That river looks like the one just down the road here in Sussex - nice roach there too.

Certhia and I have rather neglected Europe in our global wanderings. Look forward to more reports from you.
