| First success with the spinner Mike’s expertise on PC’s was required by a friend, so as we were up the way of our local lake we thought we might pop over for a couple of hours to try some more spinning. I yet had to catch my first toothy critter on a lure, to experience a take whilst spinning. Arriving on the lake around 11.30am with our friends Jim and Kay, we soon were set up to fish. First half an hour went by without as much as a knock, so Kay and I decided to move to the opposite bank to try our luck there, whilst leaving the men to their own devices. The weather condition wasn’t too bad, considering the forecast looked worth, we had bright sunshine but a cold wind, which changed in to a short burst of rain and hail storm. I started of with this spinner but after covering the area in my swim and not having as much as a knock I decided to change to this simple jelly, darker in colours ![]() About 45mins in to my spinning I managed my first Jack of about 4-5lb on the jelly but sadly he spat the hook just before netting. Nice one, that’s why I wanted, lightly hooked, as I’d rather loose a fish than experience a deeply hooked one, like I did there a couple of weeks ago. The day went slow, the men decided to join us, as they did not have any luck what so ever on the opposite bank. Jim also managed to loose his first (and last lol) what looked a good size fish, Mike and Kay still hadn’t any luck. I carried on with the jelly for a while and at about 13:50pm I finally managed to hook and land my first wee jack on a lure ![]() Who was quickly retuned to live another day. Mike who was fishing to my left also managed a small one about an hour after, next in line was Kay who was fishing further down from Mike. After carrying on fishing with the jelly for about another hour, I decided to change to a different lure, as it seems the jelly has lost it’s effect. I choose a lure (similar looking to the jelly though) ![]() which didn’t sink all the way to the bottom, as the lake has a big silt bed and a some weed. My 4th chuck with the new lure and I was in to another little Jack around 15:30pm ,Which was pretty lively and left my landing net in a bit of a mess as it got really tangled up in to the trebles. Again this little critter was returned to go off and sulk. Kay also managed to land a jack (couldn’t see the size from where I stood though)….which was the last fish of the day. 16:30pm arrived and we called it a day, as the weather was about to take a turn to the worse. Back to Jim and Kays house for a nice hot cuppa and to pick up a mahooooosive Quiche for our dinner, which Kay kindly made for us the night before. Thoughts of the day: Even catching small fish can be great fun when experiencing a new tactic for the first time. Don’t starve yourself all day only because you were looking forward to a nice meal a friend cooked for you……eating too much because you hungry can make you feel bloated and sick, specially if you can’t keep your hands of the pudding, which you REALLY didn’t want nor could fit in but you JUST had to eat it lol. Last thought is…..not all cheap tackle is rubbish, a set of spinning gear we bought from Lidl’s the other day has worked a treat and handles just fine. __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving |

| Re: First success with the spinner Spinning is great fun - a tip re lures - if you or anyone you know visits the States, bring back a suitcaseful. Use them over there first, that way they all count as second-hand. __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |
