a couple of hours spinning

After a really hard week at work, and having family commitments this weekend it looked like I was not going to get any time on the bank.
I managed to find an excuse to sneak off to my local lake on a mission to deliver some materials, and popped a telescopic spinning rod and some lures in the back of the car, ever hopeful.
My local lake allows spinning for pike until the end of April, so I managed to get all my jobs done and found myself on the bank at 10-30 with a couple of hours to myself to relax and unwind before I met up with all but 1 ( he is in Australia) of the male members of my clan for a "lads night".
The day was lovely, if a little cold with a north wind blowing, and the setting there is gorgeous, I sat at one point having a coffee and a smoke watching a buzzard circle above the lake, there is more to fishing than catching fish.
The rod was an impulse buy I had this week, I was in Lidl and they had the fishing stuff in, I saw this £15-00 rod , reel and spinners kit and thought " that will sit in the back of the car for those odd few hours I can sneak away in the winter".
So armed with the most basic of tackle I proceeded to run a series of different spinners and plugs through the water.
I soon had a take, and being new to spin fishing I still find it quite exhilarating, and landed a very small Jack Pike

I moved about swims and tried different lures again but the next Pike fell to the same lure as the first one, this is the lure I was using

I succeeded in catching 4 small pike in the space of a few hours, this being the largest

Every one of them was lip hooked by the treble at the tail, it seemed to me that they were attacking from below and snapping at the tail of the lure, I had tried jellies and these I felt knocks on but had no takes, seems I need to add a flying treble to the jellies and give them a go.

I finally pulled myself away from the lake and headed home for a quick change and then a drive down to my old home town to meet up with the boys, had a cracking curry and a good laugh, so a good day to round off a really hard week.

Well done Mike.

Just goes to show that all the expensive gear in the world doesn't impress the fish and that lures and rods don't catch fish, anglers catch fish!

Good report mate!
