pond bashing

Greenheart, Banana Steve and myself decided to meet up to do some pond fishing at Clivey Pond which is 2 mins drive away from Greenhearts house.
I was hoping to add a couple of points to the species hunt, trying for some Tench, although I knew it would be a task and a half, due to the cold weather.

Steve, didn't make it as he must have had a lovely dream and he slept in lol, however, he popped up a little later to see how we were getting on.
By the time he arrived I managed to loose my first float on the island about a rod and a half in front of me. Quick new set up and bang!!! Second float lost on the island again. By then I was getting rather annoyed and decided to set up my quiver tip, fishing it right in the margin to my right, as the owner (very nice chap) told me that some good fish have been caught from there in the last few days.

Steve went back home to fetch a float rod and reel, which he very kindly donated to me, as he doesn't use them for whatever reason, bless him.
Once he return he quickly helped me to set the rod up (I must remember to take my specs with me) as my eye sight is not the best any more and I find it difficult at times to even spot the line, never mind tying a small hook to it lol.(definitely getting old)

Set up on the float rod: 4lb mainline, 3lb hook length, size 16 hook, 2 1/2 AA waggler float, set to about 4 foot depth.
Bait: Maggot, sweetcorn, 16mm soft strawberry pellet, hemp.

My swim view to the right

It took quite a while before I had my first bites, which I missed.....I was feeding hemp and small amount of maggots every cast, changed hook bait from pellets, sweetcorn and maggots but the only bites I got was on a single red maggot. A few more missed bites before I connected to my first fish.
A little chub.....a chub? crickey we didn't know there were chub in the pond lol

It was hard going, as the weather played al sorts of tricks on us, constant rain or hail showers.

Greenheart in his swim (the muppet just turned away as I took the pic lol)
.

Around 3pm the bites were starting to get more regular, Greenheart had a few mirrors, one so small it could have been a ruffe lmao.

I had a few roach, of one was a good size, around the 6-8oz mark

and this one...now I'm not 100% sure if it is a full chub...it looks a little like a chub/roach hybrid to me. I'll let Vagabond ID it for me, as he knows best.

.

4pm arrived and we decided to call it a day, as the rain and hail were becoming more persistent and I still had to make my way through the Easter weekend traffic.

Thanks to Ian and Steve for another tough but enjoyable days fishing......Next time I'll definitely will fish the pole there, less chance of loosing rigs lol.

Thumbs up Re: pond bashing

Nice report Twiddles. By Clivey pond standards, the fishing was hard. I think it was down to the cold weather over the last few days. At least we both caught & only you could catch 2 Chub from a water that i've fished for years & did'nt even know it held any..... I did manage a few good sized roach on waggler fished maggot, plus a few micro carp & perch. I also had one Mirror carp of around 6-7lb on a pineapple pop-up boilie. Still a very enjoyable day though, when it was'nt raining or sleeting....

Re: pond bashing

Nice report.

That second fish has a pronounced bluish sheen, but without seeing the full length and the lower fins I couldn't identify it for certain - other than to say it is not a chub, nor an orfe.

Are there orfe in the pond? cos a roach/orfe hybrid is possible. That would account for the blue colour. ..or it could just be a roach - the colouring can vary - some have very pale lower fins.

Has your book arrived yet?

Wilza is on a distinguished road
Re: pond bashing

well done, I'd say that fish is a true roach, i'm sure roach don't cross breed with chub
