| Last day of the season, a trip out. Well today was the last day of the coarse season, so with three months until I can fish a river again I made the most of the day off and fished my local river for a day. Did not start too early as I was feeling a bit rough this morning, but got to the river about 10 and set up to trot a float under the bridge for dace. After the rain we have had the water was a bit coloured but still reasonable, not ideal for sight feeders so trotting was going to be hard work. After about 20 minutes I spotted some movement as my float skipped across the shallows, and then I struck into the first Trout of the day. had a couple more before I moved down to the other bridge, there were 5 other anglers about, all of whom were getting loads of Grayling and the odd trout. I trotted from under the bridge and soon started to get into some of the Grayling, my technique with the float is not that good and bumped off a couple of the better ones, I think I was striking too early and not getting a good hook hold. By about 2 o'clock I had run out of energy, so I took the lazy man's option and fished the quiver tip for the rest of the day, maggot feeder and a small hook, feeder light enough to bounce along in the flow, this is becoming a favourite technique of mine. From there on in it was a fish a chuck near enough, mainly Grayling with the odd trout. About 4 pm I decided to walk halfway back to the car and try a different swim, this too was fish a chuck, small Grayling and if I did not get a bite in the gully I cast into then as the flow bounced out into the shallows I would pick up a Trout. The trout where very lively, and sizes ranged from 1/2 lb to just over the pound. I did notice that there were some very different colourations to the Trout I picked up, here are three different ones I caught today. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is one of the obligatory Grayling ![]() I stayed till it got dark nearly and set off for home having caught well over 50 fish. __________________ Life is understood looking backwards, but it must be lived forwards. |

| Re: Last day of the season, a trip out. What a lovely way to end the season....well done!!! ![]() I have noticed that the second trout has a longer shaped mouth. Some lovely fish, I keep forgetting that we got a lovely chalk stream only a stone throw away from our house. I must fish it more often in the new season. __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving |

| Re: Last day of the season, a trip out. Nice way to end the season Mike. The second "Trout" looks suspiciously like a sea trout! ![]() __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe |

I am used to sea trout being very silver and distinctly spotted. These did not strike me as sea trout, even though they fought like grayling!! I could be wrong, I am no expert on these things. __________________ Life is understood looking backwards, but it must be lived forwards. |
