| Last weekend, wound up at the Royalty Well, I had planned to go to the Avon at Winkton, having heard that it was less pressurised than the Royalty, but due to my navigators errors, such as not looking at the map/directions. We got to davies tackle to get the tickets to be told that enough Winkton tickets had been sold, so all the good swimswould be gone. So we wound up on the Royalty. First time there, and first time fishing a river that fast, there are a few fast stretches on the Frome, (Somerset) where I like to go, but nothing like this. Thankfully I had some heavy weights, and some monster swim feeders. I set up the heavy feeder rod, and a heavy 7 AAA Avon float. All I managed to catch, and the swim was just down stream of the pipes, was a hand full of small trout, a minnow or 30, and a nice chub of about 1.8.0 I new it might be hard, but only a couple of Barbel came out, and just every spot was gone by 9.00. I can't complain, I learn't, and shall return at some point. Lots of anglers were 'trundling', looks like an exhilarating method. I had problems with baits on the feeder rod, every retrieve with either maggot, casters, corn, luncheon meat came back with a bare hook, only boilies came back, are there many 'C'-beasties in there, and are they active at this time of the year? As only a couple of Barbel came out, I am quite proud of my chub, I had hopes of a roach or two, or some dace, but if wishes were fishes............. |

| Re: Last weekend, wound up at the Royalty It seems like everywhere was pretty busy on Saturday.....I was lucky on Sunday when fishing Throop, not many people there. Well done to the chub, it's only a few weeks ago when I caught my first one, I was chuffed to bits. | Re: Last weekend, wound up at the Royalty Well done on catching. The Avon, especially the Royalty, can be a daunting fishery, even more so on a first visit! "Trundling" or "Rolling" is a very good method, particularly with meat. It pays to be very mobile, not easy when it's crowded, and search out the most unlikely holes and gaps. Ray Walton has made it his "own" method and is incredibly successful, but he does fish an awful lot! Have a read of this article: http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/new_site...eid=25&catid=4 When float fishing I tend to use a heavy Avon/Chubber style float and have the shot bulked (or main bulk and then a mini bulk): ![]() Now that the season is closing fast, at least we've got three months to think about how to tackle it next year! ![]() __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe |
