| As this is the last weekend of the season, I had planned to fish both days. But sod's law turned on me and so I only had today (I may sneak a couple of hours tomorrow - who knows ).So this was probably my last river trip until mid June! Had to be the Dorset Stour again didn't it? . Another 70 mile drive in teeming rain and strong winds did little for my confidence. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. I was hoping for a Winter Barbel or maybe some Chub again and had planned to trot a float to tempt my quary. This time I managed to secure my chosen swim so up went the confidence by a few notchesSecond trot through I hit a fish which went off like a train. Turned out to be a very good Seatrout (maybe Salmon) of around 8lbs, but it eventually threw the hook (after trashing the swim somewhat!). Four hours passed without a sign! Then another Seatrout, I managed to land this one, it was about 3lbs: ![]() Within 30 minutes I was into another fish which was altogether far heavier and almost sedate. Not sure if it was a Chub or Barbel so I played it quite carefully on the light gear. It eventually surfaced... a Barbel.... and away it went again! I slowly gained line and eventually, with a huge sigh, guided it into the net. Turned out to be a very pleasing 8lb 13oz: ![]() Well pleased to have landed a decent Winter Barbel, more points for the Team and nudged the Forum Record a little higher as well! ![]() Things went pretty quiet but I did tempt a good Chub on similar tactics. I thought it was a "really good one" as I played it but was still well satisfied with 4lbs 15oz: ![]() I was more than happy with the outcome of the day, especially as the conditions got worse as time progressed. But, as this was probably my last day, I decided to stick it out until the end. As the light faded (but the wind and rain increased ), I switched to the 70gm maggot feeder with two maggots on an 18. At just after 6 o'clock the tip "bowed" a bit more solidly in the wind and I lifted into another solid fish. Convinced this was another Barbel, but on more suitable gear, I gave it some heavy pressure. I eventually came out the winner as another superbly conditioned Barbel slid into the net. This one didn't quite make double figures as it registered 9lb 10oz. Well pleased! :![]() I packed up soon after that and did not notice the heavy rain and gale force winds at all as I made my way back to the car ![]() ![]() __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe |
