Neil Nets Two Double Figure Barbel!!!

But unfortunately it wasn't me!

Found myself back on the Dorset Stour this morning, although this time I was a couple of miles downstream of last week's escapade.

I had a long walk to an area I knew would be reasonably sheltered from the gale force winds and usually held a few chub and maybe barbel. But when I arrived at my intended swim the only other angler on that part of the river was in it! Never mind, I'd slot in a little further downstream.

So to cut to the chase, all I could muster was a few chub on trotted maggot with the best being a rather ragged specimen just short of 5lb:

Good sport and quite enjoyable, but..........

.......this other guy (also called Neil) proceeded to land two superb barbel on trotted maggot and also lost another. What's more they were both "doubles":

12lb 03oz

11lb 10oz

A superb feat of angling and a really nice guy.......but ......"I wonder what if?"

Re: Neil Nets Two Double Figure Barbel!!!

What a superb specimen that second barbel is - almost fin and scale perfect.

If you didn't catch two big barbel, at least you took two superb photos. As Dick Walker once said, the next best thing to catching a big fish is seeing one of your mates catch one.

That's an elderly chub there, but a nice size. I fish a series of small lakes joined by a stream - you get to know the chub almost by name, and over the years I have watched them grow and age - eventually showing scales like the one in your pic.
