| March brings breezes sharp and chill... A bit of a brass monkey's day this morning. Never mind, the new gas stove, new condensing boiler, new shower and bathroom with all the attendant piping and tiling are all in place and working - so the first fishing trip of the year is on ! (Well I caught a few sea fish in Tasmania on New Year's Day before we flew home, but this is the first UK trip of 2008) Thought I'd try a new flavour for the maggots - Shellfish Concentrate. Put a few drops on the maggots and left them to adsorb the flavour overnight. Opened the tailgate of the car this morning and Phwooaar! Did those mawks pongo! Full of hope, I started to trickle a few maggots through the swim followed by one on a hook guided by my trusty Avon Royal Supreme centrepin. Was not targetting any particular species - anything would do. Nothing doing for a couple of hours except small dace, so tried another swim and got this. ![]() Couldn't catch a single one of these in seven trips last year when I needed one for the species hunt. This year having "retired" from the hunt, a grayling first trip. Its a funny old game. __________________ Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |

| Re: March brings breezes sharp and chill... Well done on getting that Grayling, I know how keen you were to get one last year. You can at least rely on them in the cold weather, whilst everything is hiding in the cold, they are out there feeding. __________________ Life is brief and fragile. Do that which makes you happy. |

| Re: March brings breezes sharp and chill... Nice fish VB. ![]() Do Greyling feed well right through the year, or is it only in the colder months you can expect them? __________________ Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. | Re: March brings breezes sharp and chill... Before last year's failures, I have picked up grayling at odd times throughout the coarse season (they occur in the Medway in small numbers, but its not a prime grayling water, and usually I have had them as part of a mixed bag) However, as Mithrandir has already said, in very cold weather when the only fish feeding are grayling, dace and chub you stand a better chance if you can find them. They also take flies in spring when you are trying to catch trout! __________________ Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |
