Is it a skimmer or a silver bream? I had a quick trip to the canal today, I had left over bait from Saturday and a day off. I did not set off early as it was so cold and I am still not 100%, so arrived at the canal about 11 am, to find it still had Ice on the water! It was going to be hard fishing. Well it was a very slow day, no boats and almost no fish, I had a few early perch ![]() But then it was dead all afternoon, i found out why when reeling in the feeder rod, all of a sudden the water exploded, and a pike of about 18inches long burst up trying to take the feeder on the retrieve, no wonder the silver fish were not playing, once he had gone it did get a bit more action on the float and had a few hybrids and this one, which I think is a silver bream ( see at the end for details as I did all the ray and scale counts and think it is very close to being one if it is not a full blood, the only thing I am not sure about is the eye, it is larger than a normal bream, but not as flat as I would expect from a silver bream), if not it is a skimmer, so at least some points for the day. ![]() ![]() ![]() Soon after that as the moon began to get bright and the wind got cold I packed up and headed off home. ![]() SILVER BREAM Difficult to tell apart when young, the two species have the same silver colouring, but the common bream turns golden olive with age, while the silver bream does not change colour at all. The silver bream has bigger scales but less in number, a larger eye than the common and its pectoral and pelvic fins are slightly reddish - not dark like those of the common bream. Common Bream Silver Bream Anal Fin branched rays 23-29 19-23 Dorsal Fin branched rays 8-10 7-9 Lateral Line 49-57 44-50 Scales above lateral line (rows)11-15 8-11 Scales below lateral line (rows)6-8 4-6 __________________ Life is understood looking backwards, but it must be lived forwards.

Re: Is it a skimmer or a silver bream? Silver Bream seem to be getting rarer and rarer but I would say this is one! The size of the eye definately says so for me. Well done. __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe

Re: Is it a skimmer or a silver bream? Only just seen this (been rather busy with the upheaval caused by new bathroom, central heating boiler and kitchen upgrade no time even for fishing - but that is about to change) It certainly looks like a silver. Points to look for Large eye Nicely sloping shoulder Blue-ish sheen to sides Orange bases to pelvic and ventral fins All those show well in the photo. Another feature of silver bream is that they are not slimy like bronzies are. ...and BTW they are much commoner than people realise - like poor cod they are often overlooked. Yep, claim a point and a half for a silver, pass go, collect £200 and on to the next species ![]() __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond
