| Mid afternoon today I received a text from Mrs. M which may have been a bit of a hint....not sure.... what do you reckon... "Debs (co-worker) just got a dozen red roses delivered to her desk" Haven't the slightest idea what she's on about so just ignored it and went back to watching a stationary rod tip! You see I was back down on the Dorset Stour where I was to meet up with a friend from the Midlands (who just happened to be down that way for a few days with his wife). It was also a chance to do a bit of a recce in advance of Saturday's trip which has the aim of finding "Twiddler" a Chub bigger than 8oz! ![]() Conditions were not too good as it was very cold and the wind had turned a bit easterly (or at least it felt that way). Suprisingly there were quite a few people about so I was a bit restricted in swim choice. However I started trotting with double maggot and managed quite a few nice Roach, the best being about 12oz. I then hooked something a little bigger which, when I saw a flash of red in the almost clear water, I thought was a big Roach. But it turned out to be super conditioned winter Perch of 1lb 12oz: ![]() A nice bonus and another species ticked off in "the hunt". I continued for a while longer but could only find a few more small Roach. So I upped sticks and moved upstream to fish alongside the weir. Dicky arrived just as I was setting up and we both settled in for a fish and a gossip! We both fished the feeder or lead but not a lot happened for the first couple of hours. Eventually the peace was shattered as my quiver tip arched over and I was into a good sized fish. My thoughts of a decent Chub were soon dispelled as the fish left the water like a missile! It turned out to be Sea Trout of around 3lbs: ![]() Another suprise and another species. Dicky immediately followed me in the "spotty stakes" as he landed what I think may be a wild Brownie (but perhaps a Sea Trout). Whatever, it was his biggest ever Trout! ![]() I then had one these (sorry for the out of focus image, but it was very small!): ![]() We came to the conclusion that it is a Bullhead (not sure if that counts in "the Hunt"?) ![]() Finally at just after 4pm the tip went over again and I was into a good fish. This time it was a Chub and although not quite in the weight range of the previous trips, it turned out to be an excellent 4lb 08oz: ![]() That turned out to be last action of the day although we did have a pint of "Badger Hopping Hare" in the pub before saying goodbye. ![]() And I've been home for a couple of hours and "she's" not spoken to me yet! __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe |

| Re: Valentines Day? Yes dear, I'm off down the river! Good grief man. Have you not heard of Interflora? They're the one's you can phone from the riverside and get them to take the "life giving" flowers right to her desk at work. What with the number of time I manage to put my foot in it, I've put them on my speed dial for gauds sake. Nice report Neil.. Couple of good Trout there mate. I didn't realise that Bullhead were a dark side fish as well though???? k __________________ Right then, checklist: Rods. Check. Reels. Check. Speckled Hen. Check. Bait…… BAIT! | Re: Valentines Day? Yes dear, I'm off down the river! That's what we reckon it was. Doesn't show up in the photo, but it was a very dark "dappled" colour. Put up a hell of a fight! ![]() __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe |
