Question River Ely Cardiff

Parked my truck up for a break next to the River Ely at Ely Bridge Cardiff today. Saw a guy there cutting back some trees & obviously clearing swims for fishing, so I went accross for a chat. The river here looks really nice. He said it's free water & contains a real mixed bag of fish. Chub, Roach, Bream, Perch, Grayling, Dace, Trout, Seatrout, Salmon, the occasional Zander & even the odd flounder. Think I might take a drive down there some time & give it a try. Has anyone else on the Forum fished there or know anything about it?

Re: River Ely Cardiff

I used to fish fish down below that bridge in ely before the barrage
was put in place, there use to be a printing factory with alovely weir
just behind there the tide would reach .
the salmon seatrout would plentyful from may ,it was abit over grown
but great for trotting abunch of worms.
i had 6 salmon one morning ,another day i had 5half pound bass,7ib salmon
5lb seatrout in the same morning.we also caught carp to 8lb which we
thought was abig salmon at first because they went crazy.
last week in the local press 2 barbel were caught from the ely 12lb
was the biggest.

watch were you park the car.

Re: River Ely Cardiff

Yes I saw the bit about the Barbel too. It certainly looks an interesting bit of water. I know what you mean about watching where you park the car. I spend a lot of my time working for insurance companys collecting cars that have been stolen & burnt out by the Viet Taff.... LOL
Has the Barrage made much difference to the runs of migratory fish such as Seatrout & Salmon? I'm worried what will happen if they make the big barrage right accross the Bristol Channel & what effect it will have on rare species like Shad...
