A stolen few hours at Amesbury

I had an appointment at the Doctors today, so decided to nip into the tackle shop and grab a day ticket for Lords walk ( my local stretch of the Avon ), a pint of mixed maggots and a pack of hooks to nylon. Leaving the Tackle shop £7-50 lighter, it was nearly midday so I popped down to see what the water was like.
It looked good, a decent colour and a fast pace on it but it was still running high

I had to cross a couple of these rivulets across the path to get to my chosen swim

I set up a 2.5 oz quivertip a small maggot feeder and a 18 hook to nylon. I swung the feeder out into the slack water near the trees and watched as it gently bounce along the bottom in the heavy flow. First cast produced nothing, so I reloaded the feeder and flicked the feeder out again, gently tightened up and watched the tip start to dance, first fish was on, a smallish Grayling

And so it continued for the next hour or so, it was a grayling every other cast. Then they began to stop taking, I had had about 12 fish, all grayling from this swim so it was time for a move, so I picked all my kit up and trudged back along the path to another swim about half way back to the car. I set up again and cast out under another tree, again as I tightened up a small Grayling took the bait.

I rebaited and cast again, this time the feeder rolled about 10 feet along the bottom before I had a savage take on the rod and soon I had landed this first Trout, with a nice tinge of blue

And so it continued, trout and grayling every cast, some were just a few ounces, some nearer to a pound, the about a hour into this swim out came this one.

Best fish of the day, 720g ( 1 lb 7 oz) Grayling

I had a couple more after that so at 4-15 I decided to call it a day and go and meet Claudia from work and get something for dinner. I had had over 30 fish in the session, about 3 hours fishing.

Very satisfying, and I convinced the Doctor to let me go back to work, light duties only and a staged return ( not full weeks for a while ), all in all a good day.

Wow sounds a busy session but looks like you choose the correct type of swim for a river in flood

Get yourself down here one weekend, and I will put you on them. The whole day cost me £7.50, that was bait, dayticket and some hooks to nylon, I have spare rods if you what to borrow some, and I will guide you to the holes that they hide in. You will have your first grayling in under half an hour on this stretch.

Re: A stolen few hours at Amesbury

Get back to work! You're catching far too many points!

Good session and even better news from the Doc.
