| Doctors Orders Well after seeing a specialist and returning to my doctor I finally have a diagnosis of why I have been signed off for two months so far, I seem to have had a virus which caused the heart to swell and has left me with chronic fatigue. I have stopped having the chest pains, just got no energy or stamina, so I asked the doctor what I should do, she suggested gentle exercise and a new dietary plan. So, eyes lighting up, I asked " would fishing be a good start?", " Fishing would be ideal exercise as long as you do not walk too far" BINGO!!!! Fishing on Doctors orders! So today I took a trip out to Tober to see if this cold weather had stopped them feeding. I had minimum kit, so as not too kill myself with the walk, a few pellets and boillies, two rods and reels, a little box of tackle, chair, flask and a pasty. I arrived at 8 am, to find one chap already on the lake, he had been staying a few days in one of the cottages, he told me how he had lost his rod yesterday as a fish ran off with it! I noticed he was still fishing like a quivertip on a carp lake using a carp rod, some people never learn. he told me that it was slow yesterday and not much had shown. I walked around to the deep end of the lake ( with two rest stops on the way!), and set myself up, I was going to try shorter than normal hooklinks for me, about 5" using fluorocarbon, a running leger on a 1oz lead, and size 10 hooks with small baits ( I picked up some 8mm soft hookable high oil halibut "S-pellets"). The morning was slow, the carp were playing Polaris missiles all around the lake ( I would love to know why they jump vertically out of the water in this temperature, cannot be to catch insects as none were showing, anybody know why?), but not much was taking bait, a couple of others turned up and set up, but no real signs of catching, I spoke to some of them later and the only guy who caught more than the odd one was fishing maggots, he had 3 out, biggest 6 lb. At 11-50 along came the Blank Buster ![]() A small hybrid with a damaged mouth, about a 1 1/2 pounds. At 12-20 along came the second fish of the day, another carp, this time a mirror of about 8 1/2 lb, with a very badly damaged mouth ![]() I think too many "serious carp" boys have been hauling them out on heavy gear and ripping the mouths. The wind changed and the carp went quiet, everyone else stopped catching too around the lake. the rest of the afternoon all I got were the little tip taps of bream sucking the bait, and at 3-20 my margin rod sprang into life and I landed this bream at just under 5lb ![]() I continued fishing up till dusk, fed up with the bream knocks I had scaled up the bait and hook size, I had a size 8 hook and a large bloodworm dumbell on, going for last cast at 4-45 saying I would go at 5 within 5 minutes my open water rod shot off and I had another bream, this time just over 5lb ![]() So with that I packed up and headed home. I was happy that I had caught as much as anyone on the lake that day, the tactics I was comfortable with, and although I am completely knackered and will need a day on the sofa tomorrow to get over a day out, at least I was following Doctors orders! __________________ Life is brief and fragile.
