What was happening was that the carp jumped out, then turned the re-entry into a crash-dive to the bottom, where they plunged their head into the mud - obviously feeding (almost certainly on bloodworm which were very prolific there). I watched this happening for a good twenty minutes, until the mud stirred up by this behaviour obscured my view.
