| Bristol Avon report -the hunt for species points As Team Moonraker are lagging a bit behind in the Forum species hunt. I'd decided to fish the free town water in Bradford on Avon, as I thought this was my best bet for a variety of species & a few quick species hunt points. I was hoping to get some fresh caster & fish it with hemp, as this always produces the better Roach & Chub here. However on the day I was unable to get any caster & had to settle for Hemp, Maggots & Luncheon meat. I arrived at the river at about 9am & set up a float rod with a loaded crystal waggler & a medium feeder rod with a 1oz Arseley bomb, long hooklink & size 12 Drennan speciemen hook. Downstream view Upstream view I loose fed two lines. The middle of the river for fishing with the waggler using maggot & hemp & the far bank for fishing with the feeder rod using hemp meat & maggot. I set the feeder rod up beachcaster style, using a specially modified rodrest that a friend made for me some years back. This allowed me to fish the far bank without the current & dead leaves etc pulling my line around. First cast with the waggler rod produced a small Dace. My only one of the day. I then started to catch some nice Roach, between 8-14oz, Perch to 1.5lb & a few Bleak & Minnows. The problem with this free water is that it has to be shared with all the local kids & duck feeding community. One nice little lad decided to stand right beside me with a 5ft solid glass rod & a pike plug that looked like it was designed to catch Moby Dick & proceeded to cast through my carefully fed swim, snagging my line several times & scaring every fish in the neighbourhood... I also had to contend with about 100 ducks, geese & swans charging through my swim as old dears either side of me threw handfulls of bread in...![]() There was also a guy wearing a pair of chest waders & fly fishing the shallows upstream of me for pike. Although he did not disturb my swim, I was quite interested to see him leave the water & start to flyfish from the footbridge over the river. I was dying to see him hook one of the large pike that lurk in this part of the river, as the bridge is about 20ft above the river & i'd love to see him try to land one from there as theres no way to get near enough to the water to net it... ![]() From a species hunt point of view, it was a succesfull day, with 7.5 points achieved, although I was dissapointed not to catch any Chub or Gudgeon. It's the first time i've fished here & not had a Chub & usually you get plagued by Gudgeon here too.. (Why can I never catch em when I need to). A difficult day was nicely rounded off when it decided to pour with rain & as I was fishing off a concrete bank, it was impossible to set up my Brolly. Such is life... __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey... Last edited by Greenheart; 09-23-2007 at 07:10 PM. |

| Re: Bristol Avon report -the hunt for species points Great report/pics Ian ....nice chub and I would kill for a perch over 1lb 4oz......grrrrh was only 3 oz of my target today.Don't you know that you need at least a 3TC rod and 15 mainline for the gudgeon and ruffe ![]() __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving |

A well directed leap would stun the pike, making a net unnecessary. But well done for five species in a session. __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |
