Giant gudgeon I took my friend JP out for his second fishing trip, back to the Frome. Apart from a few perch, he caught a monster gudgeon, about 6inches, a real beast. If only they all came in that kind of size. I held the beast, and recon it was about 3-4oz, so 3/4 of the record. Beautiful markings too. The Frome is an un appreciated river, like so many, being replaced by carp puddles. Tight Lines everyone.

Re: Giant gudgeon Nice one FC. I think Gudgeon are a cracking looking fish and if they grew to a couple of pounds would be well sought after. __________________ Dan `·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸ Big or small, look after them all! ¸.·´¯`·.¸ ><((((º>

Re: Giant gudgeon It was the creamery, just up steam of the bridge in the filed, bottom of the 1st field. Jp was playing about close in, as a newbie his casting is not up to scratch for the far bank trees. Bait was a lobworm about 3". I popped down to the Mells, thers plenty of crays about, fin some deep water, it was my first trip down there this year, have had a nightmare year work wise, (horticulture-bad year).

Tiddler weights are almost always over-estimated. Some years ago, when the activities of Mr Denis Flack were front page news, out of curiosity I took a set of sensitive scales and a ruler to the waterside. The biggest gudgeon I measured was 6.5 inches long, and weighed an ounce and a quarter. The largest minnow was 3 inches long and weighed just one-fifth of an ounce. I have done a fair bit of work on weight, length and girth relationships, and calculate a 3 oz gudgeon would have to be 8 inches long if of "normal" shape. A record gudgeon would need to be ten inches long - mind-blowing! ![]() Sorry to water the bonfire, but it was still a nice gudgeon your mate caught. ![]() __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |

Re: Giant gudgeon Don't worry about pouring water on the fire, its good to know things like that. I guess I was caught up in the exicitement, largest gudgeon I'd seen. The main thing is that I got someone else on the banmk, who has been hooked, excuse me...

Re: Giant gudgeon Hi every one- My early angling days were spent on the rivers and ponds around Somerset, then at thirty years of age I moved to the Farnborough / Surrey Borders where I had access to the big carp lakes including Bramshill Police Colege where I developed as an angler, amongst it all as you say. Fifty years old now and very much settled and looking for a new challenge. As a result of childhood memories, I have chosen that challenge to take me out in a coffin as being that of the humble Gudgeon.
