| Some small silvers from the Upper Medway Species Hunt 2007 No 36 and 37 Felt like some light trotting yesterday, so invested in a few maggots and set off for a shallow part of the Upper Medway. The water was still coloured from recent rains, but the level had dropped to near normal summer level. ![]() I chose a fast glide between two pools, where the water depth was just over two feet, tackled up, and started to trickle maggots through the swim. Six maggots, wait ten seconds, six more maggots, wait another ten seconds, and so on for about five minutes. Soon I saw what I was looking for, the silver flash as fish went for the maggots. On with a single maggot and first trot down the float dipped – and a nice little dace came and posed for his picture. ![]() More dace followed, and I finished up with a score of them. At intervals, some other fish intervened – four roach, a couple of perch, some baby chub and a single rudd. Was quite pleased with the dace – the average size was better than in recent years, but still a long way off the days when half-pounders were relatively common. Took pics of one of the roach ![]() and of the rudd, ![]() but let the chub and perch off (was too busy trickling maggots into the swim). So five species were caught, only one of which was “new” for the species hunt (ie the dace) but a pleasant afternoon, catching tiddlers and watching kingfishers whizz back and forth. Had some maggots left, so went down to a deeper pool a bit further down the river this morning and used them up – more roach, a couple of perch, and the “target fish” of the morning – a bleak. ![]() __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |

If it's any consolation, went mullet fishing yesterday in my silver submarine (drove through one of the heaviest downpours I've ever seen in the UK) - and blanked! __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |
