A few dry hours exploring free waters With all the rain I thought we might well be stuck in the house this weekend. With the forecast giving a chance of dry spells on Sunday Claudia bought some maggots and we decided to investigate some of the free stretches on Sunday morning between the showers. I was up early ( 5 am ) but the weather was foul so left Claudia to have a lie in, she appeared about 7 saying " why didn't you wake me up!!", " Because it is peeing down out there". Several cups of coffee later we decided to have a drive around and see if we could snatch an hours fishing. First we set off for Wareham and had a look at the free stretch of tidal river there, looked OK but we would be a way from the van and the weather still looked iffy so we gave that a miss, I suggested investigating a "bluepool" a few miles away that I knew of, reputed to be good fishing, free and carrying carp upto 30lb. Rain had now stopped and we arrived at the lake, had a long walk around, was still abit windy, so much so that the first catch of the day was me retrieving Claudia's hat from the lake. We liked the look of the place so about midday we set up on the far side of the lake and settled into some fishing. Claudia saw a low double carp swim by in the crystal clear water, she was now on a mission. here are some views of the lake ![]() ![]() ![]() I was fishing maggots and feeder and very soon I was mobbed by small rudd by the dozen, I was not kitted up for anything but river fishing and will return with some heavier tackle. one of the 30 or so tiddlers I caught ![]() Claudia concentrated on the lily pads in the corner and after a few hours was rewarded by a cracking take, this dived under her second line and whilst trying to free it the hooklink broke off, she managed a glimpse of it and we think it might have been an ornamental hybrid. Nothing really was caught but the place needs a full day campaign to see what is lurking there. A couple of others there were struggling and 1 guy spinning had a couple of Perch, and dropped a jack pike. One to try in the coming months I think, at least we had 5 dry hours and got out fishing, and got home for a pint and a chinese not too shattered for work the next day.

Re: A few dry hours exploring free waters Looks an interesting fishery Mike. I seem to recall going swimming there when I was a kid with my Grandmother who lived in Poole. Not many free waters about these days... __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey...

Re: A few dry hours exploring free waters I must say, I have never seen a fish like the one who broke my hook link off...... I only managed to get a few second glance at it, a very pretty looking fellow, body shape of a tench, fancy tail and dorself fin (reminded me a little of the male guppy I use to have in my fish tank) but the most bizarre was the body, it was a pale yellow with almost whitish spots......defo a hybrid of what ever kind. Anyway, here are a few more pics of the lake My swim ![]() ![]() To my left ![]() ![]() No idea who that funny creature is though ![]() I'm definitely going back there, as I'm determined to try to catch that pretty fellow again....and land it __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving Last edited by Twiddler; 07-03-2007 at 06:17 PM.
