evening on "The Little"

I spent 4 hours with my young lad yesterday, fishing the canal with lures for Pike and Perch and between us we didn't get a single take, let alone a fish. So I was keen to spend the evening down at my home water "The Little" and feel a bend in the rod again.
I got there at about 7pm and fed plenty of little bits of crusts around the lillies and waited for the carp to get there heads up. I love getting all traditional when I'm fishing floating crust, and tend to use a cane rod and a centrepin. In this case I used my favourite rod ever, a Chapman 500 along with an old Royal Avon centrepin that I've modified by adding my own line guide, which makes it a lot easier to use. It didn't take too long for the carp to start feeding on the crusts and I soon had a fish gulping down my freebies. I cast out and after a nervous few minutes my bait was sucked into a fishy vortex. The cane bent over into the sunset, and even though it was a good fish I couldn't resist slipping my camera out of it's pouch and taking a photo.

After a long, powerful fight an absolutely beautiful common of just over 12lb lay in the wet net

I fished on and lost an absolute monster, that I'm sure was over 20lb and then hooked another good fish on my trusty bagette

It tipped the scales at just over 16lb . what a fantastic night!

Re: evening on "The Little"

What a cracking report.....love the pic of the cane rod........I haven't tried to catch a carp on light gear yet (not confident enough) it must be a superb feeling to play one on light tackle.

Well done, first class fishing

Yep, as Mr Punch says "That's the way to do it!"

I use a cane Mk4 I made in the 60s and an Avon Royal Supreme (or sometimes I give my old Aeriel a spin)

There's nothing like playing a big fish on a centrepin - can't wait for June 1st when my favourite "carp-on-the-top" lake opens.

There's something wonderful about catching carp when your terminal tackle consists of nothing more than a size 8 hook tied to 8lb mainline..in these days of bolt rigs, helicopter rigs, camouflage leads and bait boats.

I'm not knocking the Bivvy boys (and girls) fair play to them they catch some enormous carp and show real dedication...it's just that sometimes I think they lose the simple essence of fishing amongst all that equipment..... Still it's the fantastic variety of methods and philosophies that makes fishing the worlds greatest sport. Just don't expect me not to smirk if I'm catching with a bit of crust while the boilie boat boys are sitting in their bivvy having a kip!

Know what you mean, and the loud check on an Avon Royal wakes 'em up and winds 'em up!
