| Secondhand Bait, K&A morning session After a hard Saturday chopping up trees and gardening, including numerous trips to the dump, I woke at 5.30 am and decided I was up for a few hours down on the canal bank to chill out. I did not plan a long session as on a sunny Sunday by lunchtime it would be the barge equivalent of Picadilly Circus. So I grabbed the left over bait from Claudia's Witherington Farm session, plus a few worms collected from the garden as I tidied up, dived in the Tackle Wagon and headed off for the canal. Too early for the onestop to be open to get breakfast so a bottle of coke and a mars bar were going to have to do. 7.05 on the bank, a bit chilly and the barges were all asleep, I could see plenty of activity in the water, tench bubbles all around and little swirls of small fry near the surface. 7.15 and the first rod was in the water, medium feeder rod with a maggot feeder and 14 hook on it. I then started setting up my second rod. 7.16 quivertip nodding furiously. 7.17 first fish of the day landed, a small rudd. ![]() That was how it was until 10 am. I had 4 fish whilst I set up the second rod, mainly rudd, hybrids and small skimmer bream. nothing over 12 oz but still good fun. The second rod I set up legered earthworm, noticeably this had far less takes than the maggot feeder. From about 9.30 I started to hit the odd perch, taken on the maggot too mainly. This one came in at 7 oz but posed beautifully for the camera ![]() From about 10 0'clock the bites started to dry up. I switched to chopped worm in the feeder and worm hook bait as I had used up the few maggots I had scrounged. This brought in a flurry of perch and I ended up at 11.30 with nearly no bait left, barges starting to be a nuisance and a dozen perch and nearly 40 other assorted small fish for the day. Time to head home for a bacon butty and put my feet up. A nice little morning session and good fun too. Mike |

| Re: Secondhand Bait, K&A morning session Good session, good report, splendid perch pic - I don't get to fish canals very often (none here in East Sussex) so that was an interesting post. Don't want to quibble, but isn't that first fish a roach? Underslung mouth, orangy (as opposed to crimson) lower fins, bluish sheen etc etc. __________________ RNLI Governor Nothing matters very much, few things matter at all - Plato ...only things like fresh bait and cold beer - Vagabond |
